I know people who have dmax's that take em "to the track" often to race. They always run theirs in 4wd. Is that not hard the transfer case/ everything else from the transmission up?

X2^^
Better tierods and stronger pitman and idler arms is all you need to launch pretty much all out. A solid/straight centerlink is a good idea too but isn't necessary.

so as long as I don't upgrade to EFI live, I SHOULDN'T break my tail lights?

Drop the front end down before launching it, that's the cheapest and easiest thing to help the front end live...
Add a cognito brace kit and some HD tie rods or sleeves and you're good to go!!
