Defective Right Air Temp Door

2004 GMC Duramax 2500 Sierra. Has seperate driver/passenger (his/hers ;-) air temp adjustment - manual slide lever. Right side blows hot 100% of the time. Dealer says "defective air temp door" which I guess means the switch is ok. Dealer says part is $220 and another $530 to install - dash has to come out.

Anyone have any similar experiences? I've wrenched on older cars, weld, rebuild engines, tranny's, t-cases, etc. but never touch the new vehicles.

Also - I've had consistent problems for 4 years in that I've always suspected that the fresh/cab air switch wasn't working right - sometimes it won't cool in the Summer when temps are higher than 90 deg - and the ac checks out?

I have the auto-digital temp control in my truck. It blows great sometimes, then the driver side will go hot. I swapped the control from my buddies truck(flipped) and it does the same thing.I think the door motor is jacked up.

Do the night time background lights in your switches work? When it first started going - the passenger side light went out. I could wiggle it up and down and it would affect the driver side light - going to pull them out tomorrow and have a look see?
