One more thing I forgot to add. Different companies make them, but on Merchant Automotive :: Duramax and Allison Experts you can get a Water in Fuel Sensor wrench that helps you remove the plastic piece from your fuel filter. All I can say is, it makes life SO much easier.

I've wanted to do that on my last two D-Maxes, trouble is I always remember it about the time I'm staring at the plug starting to pull it for a change.
We were discussing the different methods used by some for gaining access to the Fuel Filter last night while I was changing mine. I explained how in this nice tutorial, it states to remove the filter between the battery tray and the A/C lines.
Of course to do this you must remove the battery. As you can see, the battery tray is notched back for the necessary room.
I then tried to insert a new filter between the A/C lines and the intercooler tube and it just won’t fit, regardless of the size of hands.
I don’t know how ya’ll do it this way.
I gave up on draining the filter and inserted a funnel below to a drain pan to pour into instead.
Instead of the WIF sensor wrench, I've always just used my King size Channel-Locks without damage.

I pull my filter up thru the top. takes me about 8 minutes total to change mine. i do have a question on what filter everyone uses? I buy mine at the dealer, they changed filters to a white one. has anyone had issues with these filters? i pull heavy and the last two loads it keeps throwing the check fuel filter code. I never had that problem with the blue ac delco filter. Just changed the filter before the last run i just finished to Tx. did the same thingloaded nothing empty.

i did my own fuel filter for about $50 and a bit of cussing trying to get the thing to break free.
got tired of $100+ oil changes, so i bought 3 gallons of rotella t synthetic and a mobil 1 filter today for $60. would of been almost $20 less if i woulda gone non synthetic
I have been doing my own oil and filter changes for 40 years and it is a nice way to get to know your vehicle. This simple task is often done wrong by so called professionals with dire consequences. My dear old Dad is 81 and still does his own oil changes, hope I can do the same.
I did this new Dmax at 500 miles and I was surprised at how the oil shoots out of a Dmax. I put on my Fumoto valve as I love these things and have put on 4 of these on different vehicles. Superb product for sure.
Factory filters are always a bear but I pull wrenches for a living so I know how to get the tough stuff.
I am a millwright which is an industrial mechanic. I still get a kick out of people that think they need the dealer to service the vehicle to keep warranty coverage. All you need to do is keep your receipts for filters and oil. I also do a maintenance log on every vehicle I own and my definition of a good vehicle is one that never goes back to the dealer.

I am able to take mine from top also..The WIX filters are all I have used in the past.My most recent fuel filter was recommended by a diesel mech I know.It is a white Parker/Racor filter, and it seems like it lasts longer per DIC.I will still change a 8,000 miles for peace of mind..The filter costs 29 dollars,I have started using Stanadyne also since the new filter,so,that might be givin me the illusion the filter lasts longer, but I am still happy with it...

A WIX or Parker/Racor has done a good job of filtering the fuel for me.I use Mobil Delvac super 1300 15-40,with a Mobil 1 oil filter,[ M1-303 ].The oil filter always has 30-40% when I change at 5000-6000 miles. The fuel filter never goes under 30% or 8-9,000 miles/or 2-300 hrs. This schedule has been good to me.No issues. The dino oil is good IMO,but if ya go with syn,I wouldn't beat on er too hard at first, cause syn allows rotating parts to free up a bit, also after a switch to syn,it will consume a lil bit of oil, just until ya get the motor used to the viscosity...
