Why use synthetic oil????????

What is the benefit of using synthetic oil??? Also, is it true that once you start using it, you have run it from now on????????

I change my oil every 6 thousand.....so I don't use it. Some people say it's better because it last's longer. I personally need to change my fluids every 6 thou. to make myself feel better.

oh, I agree, I change mine every 5-6K. On my 99 powerstroke I had, everytime I checked my oil, I could read through the dipstick. At oil change time, I could still read it. when I change the oil in my LMM now and I even let it drain for approx. two hours......When I check the oil after fill up, the oil is dark as hell. That tells me that the DIC is full of S***. Granted, this LMM makes much more horsepower than my 99 7.3 powerstroke did.

don't the new trucks come with synthetic oil in them now? I thought I read somewhere GM puts synthetic oil in at the factory...I will have to see if I can find that again. I personally use it because of the cold here in alaska. it ends up being about the same price for oil if you go to extended drain intervals. The longest I have gone on my truck is about 13000 miles on one oil change...I do oil analysis and change the filter during that time too.

To JuneDawg8.....From my experiences......the DMAX turns oil black VERY quickly....so if you want to keep it clean, you'll have to change it like every 1000 miles...

The reason your oil gets so black so fast is the EGR. I asked the same questions and that is the answer that I got. I did the EGR block and it is getting much better.

Alright, stupid question of the morning then, What does the EGR do and why do we need it. Also, to reask the question, is synthetic oil better for your engine, and once you use it once do you have to keep using it from there on out???

EGR takes exhaust gasses and puts them back into the engine for another pass. This reduces the amount of emissions out the pipe, puts dirty air into an engine, etc. Definitely worth blocking.
As far as your question to synthetics and going back to regular - why would you want to? Once you've made the change to synthetic, you're running the best oil you can put in your equipment. It doesn't break down under high heat and stress like dyno oil will. I run the full 10,000 miles with my synthetic worry free.
As long as the equipment you're running doesn't call for synthetic fluid specifically - you can go back to running dyno oil. If it comes OEM with synthetic fluid, then that is all you can safely run.

If our trucks came with synthetic oil wouldn't the manual say so? I've never heard that they came with it, I have only heard that people have been switching over to it.
