Cut differential when installing lift kit?

I recently purchased an 08 gmc 2500 hd. Im looking to install a 4" Rancho lift but I have been told you have to cut the differential in order to do so. Is this true? If so are there any drawbacks? I dont want to screw my truck up. I guess I get a little leary when I have to start cutting my brand new truck. Please advise.

Installation instructions found Here.

Some cutting is required for the crossmember, but no mention of axle cutting.

Yes you need to cut the upper diff ear. There is a replacement ear made by Cognito Motorsports if you ever need to re-install it.

Look at pic #6 & #7 on this link for a pic of what it looks like:

Ya there is a ear you gotta cut off. I dont think theree are any draw backs. I had to do it to my 1/2 ton I instaled a lift on. IIRC I think a company makes a ear that you install to work with the lift kit.
