Never owned diesel truck before. Friends have over years. Would you suggest buying a 2016 or waiting til December for the 2017 with new Duramax? Put deposit on a gmc 2500 diesel 4x4 slt z71. What y'all think? May be opening can of worms, but how does the duramax compare to the power stroke?
We have a 2016 2500 Denali 4x4 and love it. Some of our fluids were low, dealer mistake, the front ends are lubeable but it seems the factory only has a small amount in them so we had to put 4 pumps to plump them up. three are hard to get at so i replaced them with 90 degree fittings, the tranny radiator is asking for a rock hit so ya gotta screen it to protect it, but otherwise we have no problems. only 1700 miles on her now. there is a seat belt recall we had done two days ago that is just a software update. there are two wire harnesses that need an extra zip tie to keep them from rubbing through, explained here in other posts but aren't a problem for a while, and the DEF tank is in a bad place on a 4x4, hangs low on the passenger side. some are having problems with an oil leak on the pan area.
I would just get the the 16...you can save money by doing so. I would wait a year or 2 for the newer engine to make sure they work the bugs out first. I love my 16 other than the many squeaks and rattles in the interior...but I will have to have them look at that when I take it in for the first service.
I really like my '16 and would recommend buying one. I like what I am reading about the new '17's but after owning an '11 LML I don't love the idea of owning the first generation of a new engine again. Just my thoughts.
Whats the difference in cost between a 16 and 17? You should be getting 10k off a 16 without an awful lot of negotiation. Given that, the 16 is a no brainer, 10 thousand dollars is an awful lot of money and while the L5P will be a great engine, it will have some initial bugs to work out on the 17 models. I would do the 16 given the cost differential and from a reliability perspective.
You really can't go wrong with either, but, my opinion is this: The 17' is a new engine, with slightly larger numbers and some changes to the drivetrain and emissions system, aside from that it essentially an unchanged truck with the exception of a functional hood scoop. The interior remains unchanged. In my area here in Canada, there are rebates North of 20K off remaining 16's, which puts them cheaper then most decked out 1/2 tons. That is ALOT of money.
If you were to get a 16 I don't see any major reasons as to why you would regret it over the choice of a 17.
Thanks for input. So everyone sounds like they like there trucks. Good to hear. Getting about $10k off without negotiating. Sticker with all options is 65k. Buying for 54305 slt with quite a few options. Other option is a Denali for 59900. Have a Yukon XL Denali and like it a lot but think pulling up to a job site in a Denali pickup might be little over the top, plus not a huge fan of all the chrome (even though
I already have one with that big ass grill).
I love my 2015.5, it hasn't been without any problems though.. Had a coolant leak at the oil cooler and a transmission leak from the pressure test port.. after several trips back the the dealer they finally got it fixed.
I haven't driven or towed with a 2017, but I can tell you that my 2016 is an insanely capable truck. I'm pretty sure the extra power is not increasing the towing or payload capacities that much, if at all. I have zero regrets going for the '16.
I believe the 17s are going away from the CP4 in favor of a Denso system. Seems like a step in the right direction after hearing of the CP4 failures, not just GM but Ford and VW as well. Something to consider if you plan to keep the 16 past the warranty period. I also don't like the first year of model change. So I'd probably wait for the 2018 at least. Again, if you're not going to void the warranty (delete/tune) or plan to trade/sell before the warranty is up, then go for the 16.
Pulled trigger on 2016 gmc 2500hd diesel z71 4x4. Flew up to Laura GMC and paperwork was already completed and drove back to texas. Very easy transaction. Love the truck Have around 1500 miles on it and smile every time I get in it. Just added some iron cross (made in USA) running boards( kids and wife had issues climbing
in) Ordering toolbox and under seat cargo unit today.
