Hey guys anybody know of a 2017 Chevy 2500 HD hood with the new vent air dam fit on a 2016 Chevy 2500HD? I sure do like the new hood with the cool air intake vent on the hood.
It is a direct bolt on. Just have to also buy the vent, insulation and valve. Couple guys have already done this and posted on facebook. Hoods and valves are currently on backorder.
I read in another thread on this forum that the hinges are different as well due to extra weight and the way the hood has to angle out as it opens. The contributor mentioned that he works for GM in in the plant where these are built. If you search the 2017 non-powertrain forum you should find his comments. He seemed to know what he was talking about.
So assuming you swap in the 2017 hood would you hook the scoop into the cold air intake? Or just use the extra air to cool the engine? Or just block it off so additional road/off road debris doesn't coat your engine? From what I read on some PR site the GM engineers mentioned that the real challenge with this design was to dry the air before it mixed with the fuel...
yes the air comes in and goes to the left side of the hood, and as the air then goes to the right side where the intake is there's a catch basin that prevents water from going to the intake filter. I was looking forward to doing this project but these hoods might be "back ordered" for a while
So is there room for the catch basin and all the extra tubing in a '16? Also, someone mentioned a valve, is the valve a damper that opens the air duct/scoop on the hood when the gas pedal is pushed?
I like the look of the hood scoop but I have to say, seems like it could be a lot of $$$ and work for something that is either only cosmetic or semi-functional.
How about your carry you're DA over to the LML Duramax Brethren on FB and see that TWO have already done it WITH PICS. Some wiring actually has to be moved for the drain basin to fit while the hood is closed. YES...YOU'RE WRONG. SO GM produces vehicles but no spare parts for the body shops in the event of accidents???? REALLY????
DangerousDuramax, Thanks !! I tried to look it up with no luck , I am not on FB but searched best I could, can you send a link maybe? Rdwngr posted awhile back it could not be done !!! but anything can be done if you really want it.
It even looks like the airbag might be able to be adapted with some work. I did a 2010-14 bumper Grille swap with a 1500 hood back in 2011 and that could not be done either but it actually was as easy as replacing vin matched parts. So I do get it! I want that hood with the opening color matched just cause! But I am also guessing it's going to be a pricey deal..
Not sure why anyone would say it cant be done because the hood is identical to the 14-16 with the addition of the flow path to the air filter and the water catch basin. Just have to move some wires so that the water basin fits with the hood closed. One thing to note...this mod will be useless if you don't change to an open air filter design or cut a hole in your current filter housing. First pic is the 2017 hood and parts installed on a 2016 truck. Second pic shows the filter box design with the hole and seal on a 2017 so that the the air is forced into the box.
3rd guy just took delivery of his hood and parts 20 mins ago!!! Guess they will be the only 3 with the mod for awhile until GM can get the hood supply up. I guess the good news is that the hoods are two piece stamped so it won't take long for them to spit out a ton of them.
Make that 4!! Just an FYI...the hood is retailing for $720. The vent is $109, insulation is $65, and valve is $35. Then you have the clips and retainers that are listed in the invoice Toxic posted. Keep in mind that there is a difference between Chevy and GMC with the hood, vent and insulation (part numbers are different). And you can get either chrome or black vent as well.
I thought it would fit because there was no real body changes, I will have to join FB I guess ,just old school I guess,LOL I bet there is a way to either make or modify the air box it make it work as well, Toxic , thanks for those Pics as well, it will be cheaper than a 17 ??
Thanks, anyone have part numbers for the air filter box parts that need to be replaced? I figure for about $1K I will do this mod in the spring and get a cts2 programmer at the same time and see what happens lol
Yeah one of the guys just let me know that when they're in stock GMPartsdirect will sell the hood for $399. But not in stock at the moment because GM put a hold on them.
That's cool. Will it work the same if there isn't an ECU change? I assume it will be just like a cold air intake, seems like a lot to go thru for a hole in the hood. Someone needs to step up and do DUAL scoops.
Redwngr you are correct , sorry it was a mishmash or quotes and questions it was usmarine2001 said no way would it work. I apologize, its so freekin hard to keep up with theses posts as a lot get out of order very quickly with hijacks and weird unrelated info !!!

So glad this thread was started, usmarine2001 and I went back and forth a couple of times, I knew the changes could not have been that drastic, and that it would most likely be a bolt on affair. Glad it is, because it sure beats buying a new truck!
Man I just love the way that new hood looks with chrome vent I will be saving up for this upgrade for sure!!! That 399 price that is probably not painted hey??
It is just listed as a "hood" when they are a color matched part it will give the color and sometimes the paint code. It will likely be in factory primed condition.
