Ok so I have a 2016 GMC dmax and the other day I noticed there is a small poping noise when ever I turn left. It does not happen all the time, sometimes it's a small pop sound and sometimes it's a small pop pop sound. I greased all the grease points in the front end but still hear it. My truck has a 4-6 inch fts lift on it with fts UCA's and 20x14 rims. It sounds like it's coming from the driver side also another thing to note my alignment pulls slightly to the left now after noticing the pop noise. I will get an alignment after just in case I end up changing something suspension wise I will need to alignment anyways. So if you have any ideas as to what might be causing this please let me hear them.
Also check the bolts connecting your drop brackets to the frame. I could imaging one of those not being torqued properly could shift slightly cause a popping noise.
I had the same issue - started with a slight pop noise when backing out of the driveway - it got worse, to the point of slight lock up's during turning. I had 4 dealer appointments in my 2015 for this issue - I got a new intermediate shaft, a new bushing, or bearing in the firewall, new power steering pump and finally a new steering rack.
The Steering rack, or a combo of all 4 things finally solved the issue, however, I got left with a 2-3 inch dead space on center - just floppy nothingness dead space. When I asked about it, I was told it's within specification. it wasn't bad, but a tad bit annoying.
Thought I figured it out. My sway bar was hitting on my lift kit I got it fixed and still having the poping issue. Now it feels as if it has gotten worse it pops when I sometimes put it in reverse, go over a speed bump, go down the sidewalk from my driveway, and when I turn. When I go over a bump it's like a pop pop pop sound and when I turn it's just one pop I'm making an appointment with my dealership soon and hope they can find out what's wrong.
They have a point. Lifts cause problems, that's the bottom line. Parts wear out much faster on lifted trucks. I have no problem with installing lifts, but I make it know to the customer in no uncertain terms that when parts wear out three times faster than normal, it's because of the lift.
Pops are a nightmare. That's why it's so hard to find them, not because the techs are incompetent, but because it's very difficult. Putting it on a lift won't help because the suspension will unload and it won't make the noise anymore. I've seen bushings, struts, ball joints you name it, I've seen all kinds of parts cause this.
You must still be chasing the popping sound? My truck is still doing it too. I've kind of just gotten used to it and haven't had time to take it in just for a third dealership to tell me they can't find the issue.
I haven't had time to get mine back in, but now that it's becoming more frequent I think I'm gonna take it in. Truck drives straight as an arrow, but I want to get it taken care of before something bad happens.
Put new upper ball joints in the truck this past weekend. The popping noise was still apparent. Couldn't get the lowers pressed out so I had the dealer do them on Tuesday. After the lowers were replaced, the noise is gone. Hopefully it stays this way!
With the lowers replaced, I haven't noticed the popping noise anymore. Thought I heard it once or twice, but haven't been able to duplicate the sound since.
Thank you for the lead!
I’ve got a popping noise at slow speed forward and reverse and left and right. When the driverside is more loaded then the passenger side I hear a nice squeak too, almost like a brake pad making contact with rotor, but if I press the brakes it doesn’t change the noise. Doesnt seem to happen on level ground. I can only imagine the grief I’m going to get from the dealer over my leveling kit lol.
