DEF consumption rates.

I was wondering what other people are observing for rates of consumtion on the DEF? I bought my 2011 GMC LML new end of Oct 2011. The dealer said they filled the DEF tank. Since then I've put about 3300 miles on it and have yet needed to add more DEF.

My Edge Insight CTS says the DEF quantity is between 70% and 95+% depending if I'm going up hill or down.

I've heard something of a recall where they had some issues with the DEF freezing and sending the engine into limp mode and they truned off the DEF system until they could get the freezing/limp issue fixed.

The book says 1-1.5% of fuel so a full DEF tank (10 gal) should last 100 gal of fuel.

The DEF tank is 5.5 gallons and should last for around 5,000 miles, or one gallon of DEF for every 1,000 miles depending on your driving. Towing ups the usage.

You're right. I was thinking of two of the DEF boxes from Wal-Mart and forgot that they are 2.5 gallon not 5.

My truck was deliver with 15 miles. First warning light came on at 3200 miles, I don't think they filled it completely from the factory. I added 2 gallon jug about an hr after the first warning then the next day I added 2 more 2 gallon jugs. I currently have 9800 miles and have not seen the warning again.

I haven't looked for DEF at Walmart. How much they sell it for? Seem like decent quality stuff?

It's in the automotive dept in a blue box usually on the bottom shelf near the anti-freeze and such. I THINK it was $11 something for the 2.5 gallon jug. I've only bought one and there was some other stuff with the purchase. I have been told that it is the cheapest place to get it.

The dealer is supposed to top it off during pre delivery. The factory only sends a couple gallons in it.

They did have issues with them but never turned off the systems. They would be in fines up to their eyeballs for that. They seem to be running fine now.

The EPA mandate wants the tank to last an oil change which is 7500 miles on the lml in easy conditions.

Usually though it is consumed at a 1-5% rate of fuel usage with 3% seeming to be the average across the board for everything from pickups to cars to tractors to semis.

Walmart sells blue def. It is API certified and good stuff. $11 for a 2.5 isn't bad. Although the more you can buy the.better the price. I currently get it for $2.19 per gallon. For Air X brand.

I took my truck for an oil change at 6100 miles. They said I didn't need any DEF. I believe them because I am sure they would like to charge me for it if it needed any. However, I got my Edge CTS the next day and it says the UREA is 100% full. It's hard for me to believe my truck hasn't used even 1% of the DEF since I bought it 6000 miles ago. Or maybe the dealership that changed my oil was nice and didn't charge to fill it up.

Man, you got over 6,000 miles and still full tank of DEF? Something doesn't sound right with that. From what I've read 7,000 miles or so is all your going to get on a full tank, so yours should be getting pretty empty.
