Something I found out about regens...

So, I was out hog hunting at my ranch last night. My truck hit 44 grams of soot and the high idle started happening. I was in the middle of nowhere on rocky roads, so no way of going 30 mph for the regen to start. I continued to creep around in my truck at a speed of less than 10 mph for a couple of hours. To my surprise, the DPF started to heat up and it started to regen at less than 10 mph. I have an edge insight, so I could actually see the soot being burned off. I was always told regens don't start until 30 mph, so I learned something new last night.

Interesting. While it is understandable they would want the truck to be at speed while the regen occurs, there must be a "desperation mode" that kicks in once the ECM realizes a DPF plugging is imminent.

I thinks its if the truck is moving itll start to burn off the soot. @ 30mph or faster it burns off the soot faster. & if you get the 'clean exhaust filter' you have to drive 30 mph or faster. @ that point the DPF is near plugged up or it is plugged.

It just surprised me that the DPF actually got hot enough to burn the soot. I was actually kind of nervous because I was driving over some tall grass at times and had to keep looking behind me for fires since the DPF was getting close to 1000 degrees.

I'm new to the diesel world and my question is. how do you know when your truck is going into regen? Every now and then I'll get a weird smell and I'm assuming thats when my truck is going through regen???

What I noticed in my 2012 is the DIC Compass loses the correct heading and the fuel economy drops quickly. Sometimes I smell the odor sometimes not. I plan to buy a CTS Insight to watch my soot levels.

I have an edge insight monitor, so I can just check the soot levels and DPF temp. The easier way to tell without any gauges is that the truck will idle higher than normal.

Haha...no. Only saw 3 and one was in really thick brush and heading away from me. The other two were smaller pigs and were at a full sprint across a brushy field. I don't this I was hunting the right pasture, though. Going to try to go back next weekend and try out a different spot.
