Mine makes a fair bit of noise, kind of a whirring maybe would describe it. I've read up on the pump rub issue, so I checked my fluid level to be sure, bit I'm up to the fill plug, so...?

I haven't torn one apart, but if there are straight cut gears, those are louder than sprockets or helical cut gears. That might have something to do withi it.

The transfer case has chains in it. So maybe it is the chain making noise?

No, I took it to the dealer when I first noticed the noise, but it is correct to say the first thing to do should be to check the level.

My exhaust is still factory stock (i.e. quiet) which makes any case noises that much easier to hear, but still I find myself wondering if my noise is normal for an HD part, or if something is wrong.

At highway cruise, light throttle, the volume of the transfer case whine on coast down is about 75% as loud as the engine itself. How loud is yours? Is your exhaust stock like mine?
Had mine checked when first purchased, it has a growl during acceleration
and deceleration, dealer stated the 2011 have that growl sound. Had them write it up and test drive just so there is a record of it.

Well I had the occasion to drive another new truck, and it makes the exact same sound in 4HI as mine, so there is nothing wrong.

I guess if one comes from the half ton world, where everything is car like and no need to accommodate 800 ft-lbs, transfer cases can be made relatively silent. Not so in the HD world.

I don't normally drive in 4wd but I just recently went on a snowmobile trip and the highways were terrible so I put in 4hi and left it in there for 2000+ kms. Driving at 100-140km/h and never noticed any noise. I have a 5" straight pipe so maybe I can't hear it but I can't feel anything either. I also changed my oil to transynd. Filled it through the full hole until it came running out.

Our cases (NNBS) have been redesigned and shouldn't need that. I think all nnbs 07 or so and up should be covered with the new case. Here is the new and old.

Which year did this change take effect? Does "NNBS 07" imply 2007 and newer?
