2011 with D.E.Fluid Issues

Hello and thisis my first diesel , I love it !!!
But I was not well informed on DEF and the salesman at he dealershi wasnt either. I was told I used contaminated fluid and the dealer charged me $300 to drain the tank. I talked othe vice president fo the after market DE fluid and they had no recalls. anyone have issues with DEF? Iwsh I looked this site up before buying , kinds regret getting vehicle with DEF as everytime we go on a trip on the way back I get a fill up or reduced speed , One time I thought I was slick and refueled without shutting down the engine, it reduced my spedd to 55mph!!! it knew I refueled, thats like giving your wife gps tracking on your truck!!!

Welcome to the forum.Where did you buy the so-called "contaminated" DEF?As with anything in life, you usually get what you pay for; that most likely pertains to DEF as well.I personally would not put any product of questionable quality in my truck.I was not aware that refueling with the engine running will put you in limp mode.

There have been issues with this where its not actually the DEF fluid its a sensor in the truck. Do a search for more reading on this but here is one thread that people talk about this. It seems to be more prevalent in the 2011 year.

Make sure the latest calibrations are installed. If the dealership does not know how to work on the system, find one that does. The system is kinda tricky. Poor fuel quality will also get this message and DTCs to set. We can thank the government for this wonderful system. I can just about guarantee that not one manufacturer would put this on their vehicles if the government did not make them do it.

The DEF doesnt know when you filled up your fuel tank. It uses DEF fluid based on your driving habits. If you drive in the city and are heavy on the right pedal you will have more frequent regens which will cause you to go through DEF fluid quicker. If you drive all highway and are easy on it you will have less frequent regens requiring less DEF fluid. Roughly you should get about 1000 miles out of a gallon of DEF fluid. Now for me I regen about every 400-500 miles which I fill my DEF tank about every 6k or so. Hope this helps. Also make sure you find a dealer who knows about the system so they can trouble shoot it better for you and also explain it to you how the system works. good luck

DEF consumption is not related to REGEN. DEF is continually injected into the exhaust, not just during regen. It is injected based on a ratio of fuel consumption, so the more fuel you're burning, the more DEF will be used. You use more DEF when towing than when empty for-example.

Thanks for setting that straight. I had the completely wrong understanding of the system.

In 16K plus miles I've only added DEF 3 times (just added the third 2.5 gal box a few weeks back). The dealer didn't fill the tank when I bought the truck. It had what came from the factory plus 2 gal that were in the truck unde the rear seat. Comes out to 2K per gal or so. It does all depend on how much deisel you use. The more NOX the more DEF used.

The brand from the dealer was GM and since then I only use BlueDEF bought at Wal Mart for under $12 a box.

How did the dealer prove that it was contaminated DEF. Look up the Poor Quality DEF string on this site. I would suspect that the dealer bent you over and didn't even kiss you, let alone give you the courtsey of a reach around!
