Yes it's a wax coating. I cleaned my frame with a pressure washer and it looked black again instead of dirtroad brown, but I wasn't satisfied with it. Like you said, it peels, attaches dirt and leaves metal exposed too easily. I went over the frame with several scotch brite pads to scuff up the wax, blew off the dust with my air compressor and washed it the best I could with soap and water. Let it dry and went over everything with several cans of rustoleum truck bed liner spray. It looks brand new now.
For easiest removal use aircraft stripper. Spray it down and after a few minutes use a heated pressure washer and you have bare metal. Scuff it and paint it. We done one frame on a lifted suburban and used filler primer and lots of sanding then used some $$$$ gloss black and it looked better than the body. I would not recommend a gloss paint for a dd though. Water spots like crazy.
You can also use laquer thinner in a pump sprayer. It's cheaper but you have to use a lot more and soak the crap out of it.
For my lml I am sticking with the factory wax for now.
Btw has anyone ever had the wax drip on them while plasmaing some factory brackets. OUCH

Yes! I relocated my rock lights and when I was welding the brackets on, something VERY hot started dripping on my (harry) arm! OUCH Had to use brake clean to scrub my arms clean. I don't know how women do the hot wax thing. lol
Steamed my frame off, then bought some stuff in a spray can, I think it us made by vht called chassis and roll bar paint. It's a satin black, it sure made it look beautiful. It's about the exact shade the factory wax is.
