For the past eight months I've been looking at the thread about the 2017's and been biding my time, paying off bills and getting myself into a position to be able to purchase new sometime early next year after the dust settles. I sold my LMM back in 2011 and got a Honda Accord due to financial constraints. Now I'm nearly back in a position where I want another truck and can afford it. With the looming release of the 2017's a few pictures, some technical details released (Engine specs yesterday) and speculated, I'm eager with anticipation.
In trying to get up to speed on what's changed since I was in the game, I went to a local dealer yesterday who had a couple of 2016 2500 LTZ's with all the bells and whistles I wanted. I test drove the Deep Ocean Blue Metallic and really liked it. This was my first choice in color. Though it didn't quite have the get up and go I was hoping for or that of what my LMM did after tuning, it was still a very nice truck. I was up front with the sales guy about my intentions of kicking the tires and not making a purchase, but alas that didn't stop him from trying. I love the Blue, but I also like the Silver Ice Metallic, mostly because it's easier to keep clean. Not as flashy as the blue, but it looks nice and I could see adding some things to make it stand out the way I want.
As luck or misfortune would have it he brought out the sales manager whom happened to be a 2016 Duramax owner himself and we talked shop for about 15 minutes. I asked him what he could tell me about the 2017's since he learned I was sort of waiting for one. He mentioned that he had heard there was going to be an optional 8 speed transmission, but was unsure if it was going to be an Allison or another brand. That piqued my interest of course and made me want to wait even more, but here's where it gets interesting.
Turns out that the blue one was only being discounted $5k off of MSRP, but that they had some 3500's that were being heavily discounted at 20% off of MSRP! The only one that met my requirements for options was a Silver Ice Metallic one, which had an MSRP over just over $66k, Blue was 65k, but I could get the Silver one out the door for $53k...that's quite a deal.
Now I know that I could probably get the blue one down to maybe $55 or 56k if I pushed hard enough ($10k off of MSRP), but still no where near what they are offering the 3500 for. The deal on the 3500 ends tomorrow night..9/26/16
Here's the quandary...with the release of the 2017 here in less than a week and the new engine specs posted yesterday which I'm excited about, but no information about anything else that might be different...better or worse..what should one do?
Things I've thought about...
How much more will it cost me to wait for a 17? I don't know what the cost increase is from year to year or if I can get a deal close to what I'm presented with now.
What happens if the 17's turn out to have issues with either the boosted Engine or the Hood air intake or other things that might have changed?
If I went with 2016 I probably wouldn't opt to delete for 30-45k miles just to make sure I don't have any issues. Could I live with the stock performance that long since it didn't impress me all that much.
If I wait for 2017, I probably wouldn't delete for even longer since the Engine performance is nearly that of what my LMM was after being deleted and tuned.
My gut says I should wait another 6-8 months on a 2017, but the incredible deal that the dealer is offering has my head on the fence...
