Installed an S&B on my 2013

After alot of reading on this and other forums I decided that I wanted to install an intake on my truck. I know there are alot of people who are set against intakes as they don't really add anything on these trucks. Personal preference and I am happy that I did. Before the intake, the best mileage I saw was 15.5 mpg(15.2 L/100km) on a 1200 km drive from North Dakota to Alberta. Coming from a Dodge that made over 500 hp and averaged mid to high twenties depending on conditons, I haven't been too happy about the mileage.

The install was pretty simple, actually easier than I thought it would be with all of the extra junk on these new trucks. The worst part was having to work outside as my garage is currently full to the roof storing stuff short term.

Not too many tools needed for the install, anyone who can open their hood should be able to install one lol

I had to remove the support brace at the corner of the engine bay...my hands don't fit under to remove the battery clamp.

The hose clamps and clips on these duramax engines come apart fairly easy, then removed all of the intake assembly

I decided to install the bottom plate in the airbox, I work in muddy conditions and drive lots of slushy highway in the winter. Also, added the pre-filter

Fits nice, I didn't notice any power increase, a slight bit of turbo noise (wish it was more..) but I did see a bit of an improvement in fuel economy. I went on a sled trip and averaged 17.1 mpg on the way home (13.4 L/100km for my Canadian brothers)

I haver an H&S tuner waiting to go in, hoping to do delete and exhaust in the spring!

You might get even better MPG if you fill up your tires to the proper air pressure, lol.

Anyway, sweet write up! Thanks for the input!

lol possibly, but my light comes on when it is 1 psi low! When ever the temperature drops a few degrees the pressure drops a pound and the stupid light comes on.

Very nice write-up.

I saw similar gains in fuel economy when I installed my CAI. The whole "stock intake is good up to 500 hp" statement is probably true, but it certainly does not flow as well as some of the aftermarket CAI kits out there.

Hey jay boom nice write up! Question though, did I see that the S&B intake housing had a removable bottom? Were you to remove the stock airbox mounting plate you could install it open ended? I've been trying to find that out.

I put a S&B intake on my truck because I wanted to. I cannot leave anything alone.

I keep reading these posts about gaining 1-2 mpg by just installing an S&B intake. Maybe I should just pull the trigger and do it, but with my luck I would probably lose mileage.

Very nice write up, though.

I can vouch for just over 2 mpg increase in fuel economy. I gained that when I was hauling around my welding skid. It made a difference in fuel costs, that is for sure.

Mileage gains likely depend on elevation, ambient temperature, etc., so hard numbers will be hard to find and agree upon between people/members who have aftermarket CAI kits.

My $0.02 Canadian.
