Re-Gear 2011LML 4:63 Rear / 4:56 Front

With a lift and 37" tall tires, it's time to re-gear. My gear guru recommends running OEM gears on trucks with single aluminum drive shafts because they are quieter than aftermarket gears such as Motive/G2.

Here's the catch: OEM only makes 4:63 rear and 4:56 front. He says that the slight difference won't hurt a thing and not to be concerned with the 1.5% gear ratio difference front to rear.

What do you all think?? What would you guys do? I appreciate any input from the board brotherhood.

i would think that it wouldnt hurt anything as long as your in soft sand or mud. but i wouldnt even drive on a dirt road with different sized gears. thats just me though and i dont know jack about gears but it seems like common sence right?

The gear guru gave the example of early Ford Bronco's that came equipped with Ford 9" rear ends running 4:09 ratio's and Dana 44 fronts that came with 4:11 ratio's. Came that way from the factory...never an issue.

Guru said the chain in the transfer case can easily make up for the 1.5% differnece front to rear...also said if it were his vehicle he would opt for the OE gears 4:63 rear and 4:56 front as opposed to having 4:56 rear aftermarket gears that howled a little bit.

Seems to me with that ratio difference the rear will be pushing the front around, ive herd of rock crawlers putting Lower in the Front to make the front pull the rear for quicker cornering but never reverse.I'm no pro but it dosent seem like a good Idea to me

I wouldn't do it. I'd choose a little humming over a destroyed t-case. JMO

If your gears are humming I would attribute that to incorrect install not brand of gear. And no, run the same ratio, the difference is too big and will cause issues.

This comes down to your personal preference. Hardly noticeable noise OR longevity of your drivetrain.

The difference between 4.63:1 and 4.56:1 is just about the largest spread I would want to run in a daily driver. Personally, I would jump for an aftermarket gear-set over an OEM one, re-gearing or not.

If you know what you are doing with pinion/ring gears, setting them up correctly (backlash issues are typically responsible for noise) will yield next to no noticeable noise over OEM... unless the gears have a poor-quality grind.

I bet the hum from your 37's will drown out any noise from the aftermarket gear-sets.

How often you jump for 4WD and in what sort of conditions needs to be taken into consideration. The mismatched gear-sets will get along just fine in snow/sand/mud or on ice. Less so on dry pavement...

Hope that helps you a little bit.
