Having duplicate key made

I was at my local Home Depot a couple of weeks ago and wanted to get a duplicate key made to hide underneath the truck incase I got locked out. The person working the keying maching there told me that these new trucks require a special blank key (something to do with an embedded chip) that costs ~$75 dollars. I said no thanks... Can anyone confirm this is infact the case on these new trucks if you want to get duplicate key made?

yes, all 2007.5+ GM trucks/SUV's have an active transponder in the key. And no, theres no way around it.

They're about 30 bucks at a dealer, and programming them is simple

Can't you have a key made without the transponder and it will work on the doors but not the ignition? Just taking a shot in the dark, thought I heard that somewhere...

Yes, there are key blanks out there to do that, but if you've lost your transponder key you still can't go anywhere
