Ya Im sure its a "normal diesel" knock. Mine does it alot when start up first thing in the morning. Im with you thought I only honestly notice it when I think something is wrong and Im looking for it.
You might want to make your oil change intervals a little closer. Most people do them every 5-6,000 miles
