| Okay, I'm back. As for the previous problem, I eventually determined that it was, in fact, a very old break. Couldn't find any trace of it, and eventually got the engine running with eight new plugs. Ran great for the last few weeks, and then suddenly stopped starting a few days ago; I checked the glow plugs, and sure enough no less than five of them are so swollen that they won't come out. While trying to remove them, one's entire heating element snapped off, and I believe is still essentially lodged in place. I have heard a few people online saying that a tip like that is actually too large to fall down into the cylinder and can be safely ignored (saw one guy's post who said he was a fleet mechanic and this was standard practice), but obviously this is a worrisome thought. Have any of you actually done this? I'm not too eager to pull the injector (I'll be fighting 25 years worth of freezing in place, no doubt) but I will unless I hear an overwhelming response saying don't bother. |
