Broken glowplug tip

I've been working on getting my 6.2 started (last ran two months ago when I brought it home) and today I was replacing the glow plugs when I found that one was missing the last half inch or so. I am not sure if it's in the cylinder or whether it's been blown out, but I'm looking for some general advice on this; what to do, what not to do (I know not to crank the engine 'till I've got this sorted out), and so on. And yes, I do believe they were Autolite plugs. Thanks.

Unhappy

I'd suggest finding someone with a borescope (flexible camera scope) to inspect any possible damage.

Does it look like its a old break or fresh one? It could of broken months or years ago without you even knowing. Are the threads fine? Id turn the motor over manually till that piston is TDC then get a flexi magnet or even a coat hanger and put it in to see if the peace is on top the piston.

It's hard to say how old the break is, I'll see if I can get a picture up soon. I've got an old surgical scope that's a simple straight tube, but I might be able to see something with it, so I'll give that a shot.

Okay, I'm back. As for the previous problem, I eventually determined that it was, in fact, a very old break. Couldn't find any trace of it, and eventually got the engine running with eight new plugs. Ran great for the last few weeks, and then suddenly stopped starting a few days ago; I checked the glow plugs, and sure enough no less than five of them are so swollen that they won't come out. While trying to remove them, one's entire heating element snapped off, and I believe is still essentially lodged in place. I have heard a few people online saying that a tip like that is actually too large to fall down into the cylinder and can be safely ignored (saw one guy's post who said he was a fleet mechanic and this was standard practice), but obviously this is a worrisome thought. Have any of you actually done this? I'm not too eager to pull the injector (I'll be fighting 25 years worth of freezing in place, no doubt) but I will unless I hear an overwhelming response saying don't bother.
