Can I add a turbo . . . .?

to my 93 GMC 4x4? It would seem l8ike a simple matter of getting a used one from a salvage yard and putting it on. does it work that way or not? would like lots of feedback and TIA!

i no there are banks kits for the 6.9 IDI, you would have to see what electronics involved, and either find or build a manifold, and route all the plumbing. Not sure if would be worth it on a 6.2L

If you want to try a turbo, I salvaged a turbo off one of those engines with the Banks upgrade. I don't know how serious you are about it. This one would need a lil TLC, but the impeller still spins inside the housing. PM me if you want more info or pics.

Im not sure what all you would need to do it. The only thing id question is if the computer is involved when you do it. I would think you need the turbo, manifold, intercooler, tubing. Not sure how important a intercooler would be.

I have a whole turbo, manifold, and support brackets from a 6.5. If your interested let me know!

Thats the way I'd go... get the stuff of a 6.5L. They don't run much boost anyway, so its not likley you'd blow anything up. But its likley that 5psi would make a nice noticeable power increase in a tired ol 6.2. I'd imagine that everything would pretty much bolt up. The only problem I see is how to get more fuel in to match the amount of air gettin pushed in.

The fuel delivery is quite easy to change, but you must remove the top of the injection pump to alter it

Sorry to jack the thread but what is the most power that you can get out of a 6.5L with a turbo. Is it like the old 12V cummins engines.

Unfortunately, no, the old 6.5's had no chance of making power like a 12v Cummins can. I dont really know what numbers to put on their capabilities, but I do know it wasn't very high. I have an uncle who had a few of them, and still has one actually. When used as a daily driver, and not pushed too hard, his were quite reliable. Unfortunately though, every one I saw that was used as a diesel is expected to be used, puked quite early. The same can be said for the tuned up ones. They could be tweaked for a bit more power, but they broke easily.

The last model of the 6.5 block was pretty decent and solved most of the problems they had. But it was lack of initiative on GM's part that held it back in the end. Too high of compression, too low of boost, no intercooler, indirect injection... and the list goes on...

With the right set up they can fair decent. But sad to say, yes all the early ones were more often than not, junk. But when they run, they're good pullers, and get pretty decent mileage. Definently not speed kings by any means, but they'll pull.

I saw this a while back, and it suprised me... TheDieselPage.com - 6.5TD Power & Performance Project
