cheap mods for more power out of the 6.5

I've got a '96 cheyenne 3/4 ton, and have been looking for some cheap, or homemade mods... i've seen do-it-yourself intakes, but not the materials list or anything. also, i would love to be able to actually hear my turbo, it's so quiet, that i can barely hear it. ANYTHING any of you guys have done, I may like it and try it too .

first thing, get a bigger exhaust, at least 4 inch. that and an aftermarket downpipe. then look at a better intake. that's the cheapest and easiest to do.

I agree there. I had a truck that wouldnt start cause the CAT was clogged. Id do a straight pipe oratleas a whol 4 inch exhaust and open it up. IIRC Ebay has intakes for around $50.

Id check SSDiesel Supply :: GM 6.5 TD Specialists, PMD failure, FSD heat sync kit. for more.

yes, get rid of the cat! the 95 in my sig would not start because it sat for 2 months during which the cat clogged up solidly. couldn't get any air to blow through. these trucks need all the extra power they can get.
a real pain when you are trying to figure out what electrical component is screwing up and it's your exhaust that is causing the trouble

Yeah do an exhaust. The turbo actually will sound pretty mean if you straight pipe it. then do the PMD relocation, can be done for VERY cheap. Get a boost controller, and there's some #9 resistor thingy that deals with the fuel delivery, and it'll giver er some more fuel. But I agree though, heath is the #1 go to guy for the 6.5. He knows his stuff!!

weird.... on my 6.5 i could hear the turbo loud and clear.... and thats before i killed the cat. today i took the muffler off so its all straight.......... how about this......when you are driving does the turbo kick in all the time or somtimes and does it stay spooling. or dies above 2000 rpm.... if it doesnt stay spooling above 2 grand than you need to replace you boost sensor.... when i got my 6.5 it wouldnt spool all the time or stay spooling.. and wasnt loud at all...... so i replaced the sensor and DAMNNNN loud and more power..........

ACTUALLY, I just took it over to Advance auto parts b/c the check engine light was on, the code was for a turbo sensor... lol. The guy cleared the code and it hasn't come back on since, but DTAHOE, it sounds like I am having that same prob. you described.
