rough idle, hard start

I just got a '92 2500 6.5L. When it hasn't been ran for a while, it starts fine and runs good. After it warms up for a while, it starts to run rough. Eventually it will die at a stop light, and it won't start without putting the gas pedal all the way to the floor for a while. Once it starts, it still runs rough for a while then smooths out. Let it cool down for a couple hours, and it will start fine, then dies. Same starting routine as before, then it will stay running. It only has 59,000 miles on it. Just put a fuel filter on it yesterday. Any ideas? I hope it's not the injector pump. Should I try some fuel system cleaner? Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm do any gauges come on?

I had a similar probalem with my 6.5 and it was the inline "lift pump" under the drivers seat on the frame. It supplies the injection pump with enough fuel to work properly. The way to tell if its bad is when the problem occurs again remove the fuel filter. Look into the fuel filter housing and have someone turn thr key on while you look in the housing. If its not filling up with fuel chances are its the lift pump. IIRC they are under $100 at a auto parts store.

Its a black box located under the intake on top of the motor. The box contriols the injection pump. Usually the stock box fails due to to much heat. Now you can buy a new one that relocates it to the top of the motor to keep it cool. Im actually not exactly sure how to test it heres the symtoms on another site.

"Symptoms of failure are stalling, hard starting, surging, poor fuel mileage, erratic idle and finally no-start. When they go it usually will not give any codes with the SES (Service Engine Soon) light."

Mine went bad and the truck would shut off while going down the highway
