Just a thought

I have a 02 lb7 duramax and the same thing happened to me while driving.
It was the v-belt idler-pully. A simple check for you would be to loosen or take off the surpenteen belt and check to see if the tension pully and the two Idler pullys turn by hand freely. Any failure in this area is most likely the problem; not only the power stering pump workes of the belt; the hydraulic brakes do to. (I know you have power brakes) they still work off of vacume or hydralic pump. Hope this helped
