I have the same problem, however I did not install anything on my truck. The first time it happened to me was within the first 1,000 miles. It happens every time I drive more than 200 miles in a single trip. I get the "clean exhaust filter" message and within 10-15 miles it reduces power to a crawl.
It has happened 5 times within 6,000 miles. I take it to the nearest dealer for them to do a "forced regen".
I use low sulfur diesel. It always happens at "highway" miles.
I've had it at the dealer now for over a week and they can't tell me why. I can not take the truck out of town now because I know it will leave me stranded.
I have asked GM to do a "buyback" under the "Lemon Law".
Just to be clear it is a 2008 LTZ 4X4 Diesel 2500HD.
Can anyone help???
So I fixed mine by doing the throw it in manual and drive around in low gear to get the exhaust temp up and in about ten minutes it was all good.......Im going to put my two cents in here on why I think this is happening, i may be way off and feel free to correct me.....Mine also happened while cruising on the freeway. Could this be caused by being in to tall of a gear and the exhaust temp isnt getting hot enough to burn off the build up like its supposed to. I understand that the computer is supposed to compensate and due an auto regen from time to time, but what if it loads up quicker then the computer is programmed for....I think a simple solution to long trips would be to kick it into a lower gear from time to time to raise the exhaust temp and do a manual regen before it loads up and kicks the light on. Or as soon as you see the filter regen light come on kick it to a lower gear heat it up and it should be cool....Pain in the ass yes!! But will it work probably?!?! Am I going to get rid of this filter as soon as possible...ABSOLUTELY!!!!!
Thank you, I have printed out the responses to this problem and now have an appointment with the area GM rep.
They are denying having seen any issues with this anywhere.
I'll update after the meeting. I did however order a PPE based on one recommendation.
I hope it works.
yeah the manual regen with ppe is cool. REMEMBER u can almost see the fuel gauge go down , and you can see ur oil % go down... from experience now i will do it before an oil change..
also the truck idles at 2500 rpm for the regen.well mine did . for over 25 mins.
so u know. let us know if it does the same for u .

I have a 2007 2500 duramax. My exhaust filter light came on at 22K miles. I do haul about 7K a couple of times a month. I saw on this thread to run the truck in Manual to heat it up enough to make it do the self clean. It did work, but my check engine light did not go off. Since it was stil under warranty I took it into the dealership.
There is a service bulletin out. Subject: LMM clean exhaust filter..blah blah blah. Performa all SI diagnostics and replace Air filter. This is for all 2007 silverado, GMC sierra with 6.6 duramax. They have removed the 2008 models. They are saying that the diesel particulate filter differential pressure is too high and that the particulate filter soot level accumulation. Caused by pulling a traiiler or loads in excess of 5K lbs. The air filter may contribute to the soot accumlation at these operating conditions. They also recommend ACDelco air filters.
I will try and scan and post the actual bulletin in a seperate reply to the thread.
Truck needs to be driven over 35mph continuously for regen to start.
If you have a tuner this will clog the DPF, You can run a very mild tuner and get away with it as long as it regens.
you need to run ULSD and not low sulfur diesel. LSD has been known to cause issues with the DPF.
be very cautious with manual regen, in a parked area you CAN start a fire, the exhaust temps will be HOT, and the engine RPM will be high.
Also be careful with a tuner, it can void your warranty, if you are having DPF issues, buying a tuner to help it regen is not a good idea, theres an issue, let GM fix it. If you do buy a tuner, you might as well ditch the DPF all together.
I just got the clean exhaust filter message and i tried a manual regen with my quadzilla stealth 2 but it was idleing at 2500 rpm and i didnt like that. is it safe to let it idle at 2500 rpm?????
