If your still checking this: First, since the Duramax was introduced, all 2500HD and 3500HD's use the 11.50 AAM rear FF rear axle. Second, the difference between 2500HD and 3500HD is an extra spring, the difference between 3500 DRW and SRW is two extra wheels on the back and spacers on the front. The DRW will add stability and better weight distribution over the rear wheels. As far as DOT and weight, as long as you don't live in some screwy state then the DOT isn't going to harass you, pull what you want. Your truck as it sits will pull what you want. As long as you do it right the DRW conversion will look fine. I know a guy that did one because he wanted a CC short bed dually and that was the only way to get it. Did it on a 2006 GMC 2500HD and it looks factory.
