Exhaust tips

Will the size (Diameter & Length) of an exhaust tip Create a louder or quieter sound? Or perhaps a deeper or softer sound? Or are they just for appearance? Please explain...

This is my experience--I have a 4" inlet to 6" outlet 18" long and it has a different tone (especially at idle and reg driving) than a friends with the same 4" exhaust and a 4" to 5" 8" long. Same trucks too, 04.5 LLY and 05LLY

i agree with NVMYLLY, i had a 5" straight and put a 6" tip on it and it changed the tone at certain rpm's a bit

He is exactly right. Take a system with no tip then add a 5 or 6 inch tip and it sounds a good bit different

It does sound a little different with a big tip but nothing like a gasser with a set of echo chambers. The Duramax is not that loud with or without it.
