I like the stuff......Mobil oil since day one, then the syn!!!
I switched to the Mobil 1 diesel truck 5-40 wt.[the full syn,i used to use Mobil 15-40/dino before the switch]I began using this oil at 58k or so,I got it at OReillys the first 2 times,it is available in quarts or gallon jugs..The gallon jugs usually run around 26 bucks,so for the oil [3 jugs/gallons]and the filter,
M1-303.Mobil filter it runs about 100 bucks...
Auto Zone began handling the oil after a while, but I originally found it at O Reillys the first time....This is not to say the oil I use is better than another one,but I will say the LBZ flipped 100k last night and this oil has served me well!!I run it [oil]to 10k with a filter change every 5k miles anyways, and when I drain it at 10,000 miles the dic says i usually have 25 % to 30% left, but who goes by that?LOL.......It is good oil in my honest opinion....The reason I don't use some of the other stuff is when i am ready to change oil i like to go get what i need at the store and i am done with it,and in my honest opinion it is good stuff......This post is not intended to start a debate of the brand of oil to use, just my experience.I have had good success.......Now my buddy who is a oil dealer can read this and grill me for it.....:tease....just my 2 cents fellas...take care

I would think you would want to stay with the recommended 15X40 as opposed to the 5W40. A very good mechanic explained to me one time the good reasons for staying with the recommended weights. I was trying to go from a 5W30 on a Ford Taurus to a 10W 40 like I had always run. He explained that the newer engines were set up with a lot tighter tolerences that the older ones, therefore needing the thinner oil!
I looked for a synthetic 15W40 for our Duramax when I got it. The only thing out there in that weight was the Amsoil....a parts guy at NAPA in Hickory tried so hard to sell it to me that he ticked me off! I decided there I would stay with Rotella. (Which we used in big truck motors for years, several million milers too!

Um....in that example it WOULD make sense to go with the 5w40 due to tighter tolerances in the engine.
Both weights of oil carry the same grade at temperature....40....so really the lower weight oil at startup is beneficial to the engine particularly in colder climates.

Like I said I was just curious what you based your statment on. I'm in no way trying to spark a oil debate. As far as the Neptune oil study site I just didnt know if you had ever seen it before.
I use to work with a guy about 15 yrs ago that was a local Ams dealer, I just never tried it.
For me myself and I, I have two trucks and two cars and Harley and a boat that I use Mobil 1 in. In the automobiles I change the oil every 10K, the bike 10k and the boat once a season. I have personally have never had a oil related issue with any veh I have ever owned. My poor old 95 4x4 Sub has just a few hundred miles shy of 300K and I've never been into the engine.
And Im sure there are people that have had failures using Mobil, however for me it works.
I agree with Tbone. I have Mobil 1 in all of my vehicles without any problems for the last 20 years, Harleys, trucks, cars, lawnmowers. Highest mileage unit that I own is 240K on '01 Acura MDX, the engine has never been worked on except for scheduled maintenance. This is my first diesel and will definitely go to synthetic, just don't know if I can be persuaded to go away from Mobil 1, but am willing to do some research and listen. I too am not trying to start an "oil war".
