bio/veggie and a tuner????

Any one run bio or veggie and have a tuner? Just curious to see if it has any effect on the tuner. My Dmax is bone stock and I am wanting to start out with a tuner/programmer. then I am going to eventually start using alternative fuel. (haven't decided on bio or veg). Didn't want to waste my money on a tuner if it won't work with either of the two.

let me know what you think.
Thanks

This is an old post but I was digging for the subject biodiesel.

I would stay stick with biodiesel and not veggie oil. Veggie oil is not great for performance and is a more novel idea in just getting by on a cheap fuel. Furthermore, waste veggie oil (WVO) ends up being hard to run without causing problems with injectors, fuel filters, etc. Diesel engines were never meant to run on straight veggie oil, biodiesel can work however.

As far as a tune is concerned, I am sure you could get a custom setup form any of the big shops out there. Overall though, a fuel mileage tune would not be a big issue on biodiesel. Moreover, I do not know anything related to biodiesel and performance tunes in these trucks. ATS sounds like they are working on something, why dont you ask them?

Well, everyone has an opinion and they are intitled! I run 70/30 - UVO/HHO, and have an Edge Juice w/attitude monitor. My truck runs absolutly perfect with or without the tuner. I run this mix in every diesel I own and have for over 5 years with no problems at all. It is all in how you prepare the UVO. Some UVO is not fit to burn and others are. You have to know what you are looking at and how to filter it. The diesel was originally designed to run on pure peanut oil and had to be modified to run this shi$$y diesel fuel.

Sorry, sometimes I forget myself and think I'm talking on one of the veggie forms! UVO=Used Veggie Oil WVO=Waste Veggie Oil (same as UVO) HHO=Home Heating Oil RUG=Regular Unleaded Gasoline. The mix I talk about is 70/30 UVO/HHO. In fact, I mix 55 gallon at a time. The actual contents is 38 gallon of UVO (filtered), 15 gallon of home heating oil, and 2 gallon of regular unleaded gasoline. It is mixed throughly and filtered in all, three times before entering any vehicle. This is the summer weather mix. I have run 80/20 with no problems, but I like the consistency of the 70/30 better. At today's prices, it translates to about $1.06 gallon!

I make and use biodiesel. I normally run B20-B50. I have the Diablo Sport Preditor programmer. Had a couple EGR codes at first but they went away never to return. Been doing this since last July. (15,000 mi.)

100% SVO+ Bullydog PMT

I run straight SVO when im not running on diesel. I have a Golden fuels systems kit and filter the oil well before use. Recently my fuel pressure regulator "busted" (according to the dealership) due to high fuel system/rail pressure (also according to the dealership). Everything ran great until this started happening. The only thing i can think that has happened is i may have made the mistake of turning up the tune while running SVO causing a high enough rail pressure to break the regulator. I havent replaced it yet so its kind-of still up in the air as to whether it really is the regulator or the pressure senser, which is what the people at Golden fuel systems say is likely. But hot or not SVO is going to have a higher viscosity then diesel i think. Im going to look into mixing my SVO to try to prevent this in the future.

"06" Silverado crew cab 2500HD, 6.6 Duramax, Allison 1000. 4" Downpipe back Diamond exaust. Bullydog PMT tuner S&B Intake. Golden fuel systems Nomad kit.

Hey buddy! Love your story, sorry about it not coming through for you. My thoughts, if I may, is that the tune in which you tuned up the boost, fuel timing, etc. should be left on a fuel economy tune and nothing more. I know of no one out there using waste veggie oil as performance fuel. Just by reading what it does and how it effects performance alone kind of gives you some idea as to how to use this fuel.

Since you are a lot farther along then I have ever taken my self with this subject, out side of theory, veggie oil is good for a long distance cruising fuel. If you plan on doing a trip from Chicago to Seattle or New York city to Dallas then veggie oil is the perfect fuel to fill in the expensive fuel to come in doing so.

All in all, when you ask for performance out of this fuel you are asking to increase the amount of fuel you need because it does not has as much energy as D2 fuel. Doing so wears down the injector pump and injectors for whatever I have yet to read on, though this is what I have read happen to several other people doing this on their very own diesels. Overall, this fuel was NEVER meant to run a diesel yet it is possible with care, time, and money.

Personally, I commend you for attempting this on your fairly new truck. Most people these days run veggie oil in anything from tractors, to boats, to tractor trailers. Old Mercedes Benz with indirect injection work for best for this operation but this is a expensive market to get into since most owners sell their old clunkers for an arm and a leg. IE. Saw a 1987 Benz Wagon that was 9K with over 200K miles. Insane.

Just get whatever it is that needs fixing and take it from there. Rip open the new part and find out whats going on. Ether way good luck and report back to us on what it was that screwed your truck over. I look forward to hearing from ya.

Erik

Hey thanks for the post Biofuelsdude. any thought or info is helpful to me. I didnt really intend to run the veggie for any performance driving, the system itself doesnt flow enough fuel and also what you mentioned about the oil not having the same energy as D2. BUT, what i think happened is there have been a few times when ive switched to D2 and turned the tune up before the SVO was purged from my system. that couldnt have been good. i suppose i should try to keep my cool when another diesel pulls up for a light-to-light run. . Anyway i totally aggree with you that the SVO is great for road trips, i can get around 1,300miles on a full tank of SVO and diesel. thats daily driving too, about 120miles a day to work and back. Ill get that fuel pressure regulator off and take a look at whats going on and post it ASAP. keep on
