Yep, I've just done it. Pumped 16gals of gas before i realized it. Now I feel like a dumass waiting for my wife so I can go get some gas cans and siphon it out. Dam you BP green handles! [emoji24]
If you haven't run the engine, just siphon as much as you can, fill with diesel, and add a quart of 2 cycle oil to the tank. That will help lube the injector parts.
Might be worth it to make a habit out of filling up only at a stations diesel only island if there is one nearby. If I am at a station that has one I use it.
You should be OK-- don't go "Balls Out" for a while. Just drive it easy. When it gets down to 3/4, you should fill it again. That will help dilute the gas.
Good news it still runs and everything seems OK. I've started going only to places that have segregated gas and diesel pumps, when able. Never go to BP anymore. I tend to do dumb shit, so the more safties I have the better when it comes to things like that.
That being said, do you really want to wait till half a tank to refill it? I may be overly cautious, and it seems like you've taken all the right steps to be good.... But I would be filling it up as much as possible to further dilute whatever is left. No scientific reasons other than probably a good idea.
Glad it seems to be OK now. Yes, BP needs to change their pump handle colors. If you had installed a lift pump, you could have probably pumped out most of the gas by removing the pump outlet line and letting it run into a bucket-another good reason why a lift pump is a good thing.....
This was the biggest thing I feared moving from a gas motor vehicle to a diesel. So far so good. This will be a mistake I doubt you'll ever make again now that you'll always double check!
Imagine the fear of living in a state where you don't pump. Which is good and bad. The only good thing is when you're in dress clothes and really don't feel like possibly getting diesel on your good clothes. But usually I try and pump it. It scared me the other day when the attendant nearly put the gas nozzle in the truck. Was good thing I caught him
No one in Oregon can pump their own fuel. I have a separate key for the locking cap- with a green tag on it-- just an extra step to fuel the truck. With my large tank, I don't have to fuel as often, so cuts down the possibility of mistake of adding gas.
Not entirely true, you are allowed to pump diesel fuel yourself and if you are riding a motorcycle, you can pump your own gas. I often pump my own diesel, get some stink eye looks from folks at the pump island, especially when there's a lot of cars waiting in line...
Learn something new everyday...never would have guessed you could not be allowed to pump your own fuel. Hell you can't find a full service station near me anymore.
I've even looked at price per gallon and did the math just to make sure it added up right for diesel once right after pumping.
Geez I was like what did I just do? It was diesel but man some times my mind needs double checked.hahaha
I've lived in Oregon for 26 years and never had any problem with the monkeys putting the wrong fossil fuel in my vehicles, but I watch them like a hawk to make sure and I always get a receipt, check it to make sure and keep it until I run that tank out. I still prefer to pump my own diesel unless the weather is really crappy. BTW, most of our diesel here is B-20 and I've had pretty good results with it.
My uncle filled my 2013 with around 20 gallons of gas in Minnesota. He drove it about a mile to a dealership and they drained the tank, flushed the lines, and changed the filter. They told him to fill up twice at 50 mile intervals then twice at 100 mile intervals then drive it. He bought it back to me in Ohio and I was ready to trade it in but I haven't had one problem in over 20,000 miles and it still runs awesome. I say drain it then fill up often. Good luck!
Wow.... That is odd. I don't want anyone near my truck as is... Let alone some guy with a nozzle that is going to get fuel all over my bed. Lol
