Thanks for the Info. Auto Zone told me to run SAE 30. I used 15-40 tho. I just didnt know the difference between the two.

Now as for Trans fluid what would you recommend. High Millage oil? my truck has 113000. I do have Edge Products, K&N Intake, Although i do Baby it.

Have any of you used Sea Foam?

I would never trust autozone for starters and I reccomend Synthetic They disepate heat better and usually have better seal softeners and shift packages. I run our BG Universal Synthetic pulling I have never seen it over 150. Amsoil is an excellent choice as well.

diesels of 20yrs. straight 30 is what was used primary, but then engines cranked hard in the winter below 30F so, you changed to thinner oil in the winter month's. Seems like it was sae 20 wt. So hence multi-weight was developed(15w-40).

The manual says 5w40 or 15w40, so which one to use. Personally I like 15w40 year round. Are the tolerances in the duramax such that lighter oil should be used?

It isn't he tolerances...its the environment you drive in that should dictate what oil is used. Cold weather environments require "thinner" oil. I live in S.E.GA so I use 15W-40 Amsoil synthetic.
