i would also check to see if the injection pump itself is no good. That can happen quite a bit on 12 valves. Just because it gets fuel to some injectors doesnt mean it gets fuel to all of them, or enough fuel.

I think you might be thinking of a VP44 24v.
It's a P7100 (they don't just go bad). The VP44 is on the 98 1/2-02 24v and they go out like crazy because 9 times out of 10 the lift pump craps out and the pump is getting no fuel to lubricate it and the injection pump is still trying to pump fuel. (NO GOOD) If a lift pump quits on a P pump you just put another one on and hit the road. That's the beauty of owning a P-7100. RANDALL

actually, ya a p-pump does use motor oil for lubrication, theres a plug to fill the pump, i believe its on the side. I actually thought about this thread the other day cause my buddy with a 95 12 valve cummins has a bad injection pump on his truck right now. runs like shit.
thats what i mean and actually i think they get there oil from the sump through the gear train at the back of the motor just like the cam would. but everything 94 and up was oil lubed. the bosch rotary pump like the one on my 4bt was fuel lubed. thats why a really hopped up rotary pump will die. they starve for fuel and burn up. hence the limited abilities of the earlier 12valves. i think IIRC around 500hp is when you start getting run away and you kinda need to get bigger plungers and barrels. and its right around 350 horse on the 4bt (8 valve 4cylinder version.) pluse the lift pumps on the rotary pump equiped motors only supply so much fuel. a good upgrade is the piston style lift pump. its a cheap way to keep your pump healthy. crewcab59 over at 4btswaps.com sells them for like 250

Get your injectors pop tested if you can. While you have the fuel lines off of the pump crank the engine for a few seconds(this will be messy) and see if all six delivery valves are operating properly. If any of them don't squirt fuel out then you might have bigger issues with the pump, possibly a bad delivery valve. Was the truck it came from an auto or a manual?
