I do it the same way on mine I just don't use that much grease at all. I use just enough to make the o-ring stick but don't leave clumps on it. I just put alittle on my fingers and spin the o-ring between my fingers. I don't put any in the center rubber bushing either incase the grease does come off. I will use lucas since it is kinda thick like grease.

Hello, thanks for the fitler change post. I just bought an 07 Duramax and I need to change all of the filters. In your procedure you say "Then crack the bleeder screw loose and start pumping the primer" - where and what is the pump primer ?
Primer is the round button on the top of the filter assembly that is about the size of a golf ball, black plastic screw is right beside it. Loosen screw, pump primer up and down until fuel comes out- tighten screw (not overtight) and should be good to go....

got it - thanks for the quick reply. I haven't even had this truck for one day and it already is in limp home mode. Thanks to this forum and thread I am hoping it's low fuel pressure, so new filter is going in tonight.
K9Duramax and everyone else - thanks for the fuel filter help. I put in a new one last night (in the dark) per your write up, primed it, and the motor fired right up. Changing the plastic water sensor over to the new fuel filter was a bit dodgy as of course I didn't have the proper wrench for it, but I was able to get it done.
The power is back to normal, but the check engine light and "change filters" is still showing up on the tach display. I have an OBD II reader, so I guess I will try and use that to clear the check engine light and the change filter codes.
Russ
Russ, try scrolling to your filter life readout with the "i" button (next to your steering column on the left) and reset it by holding down the "check sign" buttton (the bottom one). I think that'll reset your filter life to 100% and get rid of the change filter message. That's how it works on my 2007.5. The check engine lite is a different story...good that you have the reader. I have been a diesel machanic for 10 years. I feel you should not lube the o rings with grease. You should lube any o ring with what it is going to live in. For the fuel filter just put a little diesel on it and that is it. The grease is not a good idea. JIMO.
Yup, and brake cleaner is a "No-No" on some kinds of plastics. The chlorinators make them very brittle.
JPT, thanks for the write up. I haven't done the fuel filter change yet, and this is my first diesel. At least now I have something better to go by and not have to learn from my own mistakes. Thanks again for taking the time to help us all out!
