Replacing the fluid in the PS pump reservoir does nothing to address the burnt fluid in the HB unit, IMO. Similar to having new fluid in the MC and not flushing the lines to the calipers.
Taking a 1/2 qt out the top, replacing with new, running it, and the taking another black 1/2 quart leads me to believe the old fluid in the HB unit and lines is making it's way back to res.
Power steering / Hydro Boost fluid is dynamic... it does.
Totally different concepts.
To a degree, but the fluid only moves in the system when activated, as in brake action or steering. But the fluid doesn't cycle through like a transmission does.

You're seeing the effects from only part of the system. Once you're satisfied you have clean fluid in the reservoir, pull the return line from the HB unit to see the rest of the fluid that's still burnt and black.

I pumped the brakes while turning lock to lock then exhausted the accumulator with the engine off. Wouldn't that return line returning to the res in effect do the same as removing it?
I would think so, I missed the note of brake action earlier. Aren't you always mixing though, instead of draining the old at the bottom end while continually adding new at the top?
On Edit:
I did a comparison (Contractor's truck) after the Dealer had done a flush (through the PS reservoir) because it didn't seem right. And comparing the fluid at the pump versus a sample from the HB unit revealed a difference in color.
It's kinda like the trans fluid...flush whole or change just part, either is better than nothing at all!

I have to say I have tried this service exactly as stated at the beginning of this thread and it was sooooo easy I can't think of another way that would be easier. I was very happy with the results.

CAUTION: in the picture below, you’ll see the curved metal brace coming from the cowl. I STRONGLY recommend you place a rag, towel, blanket, or some kind of cushion here.
I took the libertty of fixing this pic...Wasn't sure what you were talking about, BUT NOW I KNOW!
I did find out that the Gal. is the only way to go to get it good and clean.
