If they can forget to give us a pay raise... Maybe we can forget how to shoot.
I didn't join the military for the money, but with the cost of living going up all around us, we have to be able to survive on the income they give us.
Anyways, I highly doubt it will pass anyways. Just pisses me off that the idea got thrown out.
And as far as social security not getting a pay raise. I don't care. It's not my fault you failed to plan for your retirement at a younger age. Its going to be broke and not around by the time I retire anyways, so I am not happy about paying out the ass for a program I will never see. If social security was mandatory to pay, it should go to our OWN social security program. I shouldn't have to pay for some old persons living because he didn't plan properly.
Needless to say, when I am 65 I will not be needing social security.
Now on the other hand... Retired Vets who don't see a pay raise.. That sucks. They gave 20-30 years of their lives to this country, they deserve some kick backs from uncle sam.
Getting social security was always part of the retirement package as we were always told that it would always be there. Now that I am at retirement age it is being cut. Pretty hard to plan on things when they get changed after 41 years in the field. I hope you have better luck, because I care about things like no pay raises for our miltary. I am sorry for you that you don't care about the people that are older than you.
I work in IT.... but for a state organization thats no different from a school (we work with schools)... So I don't make half of what IT pays in the private sector.
And I didn't get a raise this year, and probably won't for who knows how long. We don't get cost of living increases either.. nothing. So technically I make less each year
The same people that will decide if you get a pay raise or not are also the people that will probably vote for their own pay raise.
It is BS that a person can decide how much his pay raise is, then give it to themselves. We did fairly well this last go round, but we have to vote all these thieving bastards out of office. Then maybe there will be some fairness in the screwed up system we call government.
it's the old "washington monument" ploy. back around 2000 the government wanted to cut spending to the parks dept. so they countered that if that happened they would have to "close" the monument to visitors. instead of cutting wasteful crap they "said" they would have to "close" one of the most popular attractions. it's all spin and scare tactics, if someone wants to cut spending then someone else says well we will have to cut medicare or soc. security or whatever. it's the dems trying to set a political trap for republicans, so they can say reps don't support the troops. isn't it comforting to know our elected officials would rather play political games than fix what's wrong with our country?
Our current economic disaster is mostly a Clinton thing... He opened the flood gates for Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae... Plus everybody taking 300,000 dollar mortgages and only making like 40k a year also killed us.
Clintons repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act was one of the main fuels to our current economic collapse that we are now just beginning to enter
I'm afraid that for you military boys and all of us its about to get much worse
when things get bad we always go to war with someone, lets just hope its not China or Russia or both
Like everyone else I have a lot of thoughts on politics etc. But there are really only two things I wish would change (and they never will)
One would be a law, the other more of an ideal-
1. If you don't pay taxes, you don't get to vote... period
2. Elect politicians from the "real" world... people who have to go back into the world they help create while in office. Not filthy rich people who have no clue what it's like for "us" ... and no being exempt from the laws(disasters) they create...
That is all, now back to the real world where this will never happen,
Look at it this way. you have employment. I hav'nt had steady employment for 3 yrs. my wifes unemployment ran out last month. My mortgage is 2700/month alone and I have 3 kids from 4-9. Sucks? Yes! but be happy for what you got.
I worked in "Silicon Valley" in the '60s and 70's, we were outsourcing like crazy back then, first to Japan and then it got too expensive to have stuff made there, then we tried everything from Thialand to Scotland an in between. As soon as we built a plant in the middle of nowhere, somebody else would build THEIR factory and hire all the workers away for more money..
I'm not knocking that it sucks that a potential pay raise may be frozen, but from 02-07 when I was in there has been a steady 3% increase over those years every year. That being said pay does suck for some jobs cause not all jobs in the military are the same, but look at it this way. You have steady income garunteed for your enlistment unless "you" mess that up for yourself. Also you are afforded the opportunity to get all the free college you want before your enlistment is up and have to start using your GI bill its called tuition assistance. On top of tuition assistance there is the Pel Grant where as when the military pays your college during active duty you can also get payed again through this grant. It is based upon your income and dependants that dont work which is awesome cause its basically double jeapardy. Ive seen some guys with a wife and kid, the wife dont work at a pay grade of E-5 get paid almost $4,000.00 a semester from this grant on top of the T.A. that already took care of all the books and fees for college. Work the system dont let it work you! on top of all that look on the bright side if you arent married you get three free meals a day not the greatest food but it is all you can eat! No one said you had to go out in town and spend $50 a day to eat but most still choose too! You have a rent free place to live barracks or on base housing in which they give you extra money for! ITS NOT A BAD GIG REALLY wait till you get out and realize how good it really was!!!! you can be a shitbag or the hardest worker and depending on your rank you will get paid the same accordingly! just my .02
add it all up on paper and yea it says ya make 20-30 grand a year on paper E-5 and below, but with all the Bennies you arent paying for its more like 40-50 Grand a year. Base pay is play money to get you by for two weeks! been there done that played too much and I used to think shit im not gettin paid half what I should be, and looking back I pissed it all away cause it was just play money
it is sad that this is even proposed but i doubt it passes as well, the out cry from the GENERAL(troop supporting) american public would be over whelming i think if this went through
I feel for you guys who dont get squat.I work for a non goverment , non union company and was told we are probably the only non union electric utilty companies out their. We get all benefits , tools , boots, uniforms and I get pay increases twice a year plus a bonus.
Goverment jobs and union jobs are noy what they use to be.they get to politacal and have too much overhead
People have choices and I choose to make money and a lot of it.
1.4% increase is what has been proposed. Lowest increase since 1962. When a member joins the military, he/she is ready to take a bullet for America. The oath of enlistment doesn’t state anything about pay raises. I best not hear any of my Marines bitch about it. If you’re in the military and want to get paid more, get promoted or stay in longer. I wouldn’t have minded if I had no raise at all. I'm married, I have four kids, wife doesn’t work, and I do alright. I am thankful that I have a paycheck every two weeks, there is a roof over my family's head, food in their bellies, and I go to school in my off time for free and have a Duramax sitting outside. What more could I ask for?
Something else to think about is SS also pays young people when one of their parents passes away.
I agree Will......so many people bitch about not getting raises like its an epidemic or something.
One question for the majority of who actually bitch about it.......You think you would make more money outside of the military? Granted some could, like myself but its obviously not about the cash.
They ought to consider themselves lucky because we (armed forces) are the only ones even getting a raise.
Bummer... Cause if they can't agree I think it defaults to a 3.4% increase.
