Calling all Gas Motor Techs

My dad has a 1999 chevy 454, he is having a killer time starting it up..Sometimes it will start right up, and sometimes it takes 5-6 seconds of cranking before it starts up... and when it finally starts there is a small puff of blueish whiteish smoke comes from the tail pipe, and smells rich of gas. He just replaced the fuel pump, I belive he as also replaced the fuel pressure regulator. The odd thing is we also had a 1999 454 work truck for our company and it also had the exact same problem. Does anyone know of a common problem with this year model and engine type??

And yes, I already told him to get a D-Max, but he is sticking with the truck he has. And the D-Max is hard to find in a Suburban.

Did he change the fuel filter when he changed the fuel pump? Just a thought. Also did he check the rubber neck that attaches to the fuel pump when he put the new pump in? My brother in-law had the normal gas fuel pump going out symptom(started that morning, then wouldn't start when he shut it off), pickup had about 150K so we replaced the fuel pump, as we were finishing up the pump swap we noticed a crack in the rubber connector neck and that could have been the problem, went ahead and finished installing new pump since the old one was on borrowed time any way. Just my .02.

if the truck is sitting for long time and it takes long cranck : the fuel is draining back to the tank : this is why it takes long time to crack : the fuel pump have to built pressure back to the line and then to the injectors. there is check valve built in the fuel pump itself. even thou you have new pump. you have bad check valve. test the fuel pressure drop in return fuel line.

i would check the spark plugs also to see how its been running. also i would then check cranking fuel pressure. i has anyone put injectors in the truck at all? i ask this because being that i own a few to many gas chevys i have seen guys put injectors in and pinch the o-rings and they dump fuel in the cylinders
