3100 Watts - using P = I * E (Power = Current times Voltage)

3100 = I * 12

I therefore = 258.3 Amps

OR - With engine running......

3100 = I * 14

Where I will then be 221.4 Amps

That thing must have some ungodly fuses & wiring........

I assume the 3100 watts is also instantaneous peak power and assuming that your volume is NEVER low, you are probably pulling a steady 150 to 170 watts - guaranteeeeeed your lights will dim when it hits it - Plus you also have to add in what the normal current draw the truck uses for lights,computers, etc. etc.

A third battery will not help, it will merely delay the length of time it will take for the stereo to completely drain the batteries and leave you stranded (if you have my luck it would be on a sand trail back in the woods), you for sure need dual alternators - 145 + 145 = 290 Amps MOST likely that will be enough to run everything.

NOTE: Capacitors are simply electrical storage devices, working much like a mini-battery, but react much quicker than either your battery or your alternator can to instantaneous variations in current draw. If after you install the 2nd alternator you still notice the lights flickering, you can add additional capacitors in parallel (NOT in series) until the flickering goes away. In parallel 2 100 farad caps will add to 200 farads and supply twice the current --- in series 2 100 farad caps will become 50 farads and supply twice the voltage (24 VDC so BE CAREFUL......). If you have questions about series vs parallel, PM me. I am amazed at how far this stuff has advanced; when I was in college most caps were measured in milli and micro farads - back then a 1 farad cap would be about as big as a loaf of bread, so I can't imagine how a 100 farad unit (let alone 400) would mount anyplace but in the bed LOL!!!!

There is a mounting bracket on my 2004 on the right side of the engine, but there are additional parts that will be needed to bolt in the 2nd alternator. You will need the longer serpentine belt in order to loop it to the extra pully you will be putting on when you add the 2nd alternator - mine has a serpentine belt looping diagram on the radiator cover that shows the pattern for both 1 and 2 alternator set-ups.

Ron

Hope this helps

Ronk nailed it. You NEED those dual alts. You also NEED more capacitors. Those are what will keep the lights from dimming. get at least one, if not two more capacitors and hook them up IN PARALLEL!!! NOT SERIES as Ronk said. The second alternator with a couple more capacitors should solve all your problems!!!!
