5.9 Cummins fuel mileage

So a guy at work just got a 07 5.9 mega cab 4x4. Sitting on 35" with a 4" lift, has a 4" exhaut and no programmer. He just filled her up 524 miles and 30 gallons of fuel. That works out to 17.4 mpg. He said he did about 80 miles of towing with that fill up too. A few other people I know with the 5.9 all claim 20+ mpg. My question is how or why is the cummings more fuel efficient? You can look in my sig, I get 16 mpg around town.

that is one thing i have never understood???

If black smoke= broke

Then wtf?? Why do 5.9s get well over 20. Run fast as shit in the 1/4 and poor it out.

If smoke means its unburnt fuel then how do they get 20+ mpg and still roll coal?

My step dad had a 1995, 1999, 2001, and a 2003 and after they passed 145k miles, they all got 21-25 mpg. Completely stock, not even an exhaust. The only thing I can think of is the fact that they are 6 cylinder and have peak torque around 1400-1500 rpms.
