How cold will my Duramax start without plugging in

Hello men. I'm new to the forum and live up north. I'm waiting to pick up my new to me - 2008 Duramax this week. It gets damn cold here in the winter. At what temperature does the fear of your duramax diesel not starting begin ?

I swore I'd never buy another diesel after a '99 ( brand new ) F250 diesel left me stranded on several occassions. Lol. ...... And here I am. ( buying another diesel )

The truck I traded ( 2004 2500HD 6.0 gas ) silver birch. The 2008 is silver birch as well. So , how cold , and what's the starting procedure ? - glow plugs ?

I start my lly cold in 10 degrees temps daily without issues. A little shaky and smokey but she fires right up no problem.

Just turn the key on, wait for the wait to start/coil light to go off then fire it up.

And trust me, your new lmm WILL NOT leave you stranded like your old stroker did. Duramax is a whole new machine compared to a 7.3

Duramax's have no problem starting in cold weather unlike your old powerjoke so you're good to go

I'm from Texas, usually I will plug mine in when below 20 degrees F. For us down here, that is damn cold. I have had this truck for 2.5 yrs now, and only had to plug in once when got down to 16 degrees F one night. Only thing is, remote start does not work when plugged-in to block heater.

I would guess the HUEI system would be the cause of starting problems with the 7.3 in extreme cold? To thick of oil so the injectors can't fire??

when we used to go to colorado i have had my truck start with no issues. Usually when it was below 10 degrees i would plug it in at the hotel we were at. Well one night when a blizzard blew in it got to -7 outside the next morning and i guess someone thought it was funny to unplug me and my dad's trucks... I can say it was before the storm because the snow was over the extension cords, so they had been unplugged for atleast a few hours. Well my 01 and his 07 started up with very little problem. We always run winter de-gel additives when up there and it wasn't bad. His did better then mine and it took a little longer than normal but not more than one cycle of the starter. Ran rough as hell but didn't die and didn't leave us stranded.

My 03 has fired up in -10 degree weather numerous times(snowmobile trips) now when im home i will not plug mine in unless it is less than 15-20 degrees, or i know its going to sit for a few days or so just to keep things warm the while time.. Ive got 400 miles on brand new injectors and pump, and when its about 20 in the a.m it will be a hair shaking for a second or two, and just a fuzz of smoke for a sec, but thats a diesel for ya especially an lb7.. I should edit that, its hit or miss on me plugging it in, i do forget half the time. Lol

two weeks ago I was in Steamboat for the weekend at my in-laws house. They had a party the night before so we had to park our trucks away from the house so guest could get closer. Well temps dropped to -25 overnight and the truck wasn't plugged in. She started and probably wasn't happy haha but fired right up.

As long as your system is ok (batteries, glow plugs, CP3, fuel additive etc etc, I have yet to see a Duramax not start due to the cold. I plug mine in most if the time but I've had it sit for 12+ hours in negative temps and it was always fine. I still use 1540 oil so it cranks a little slower and sounds like a diesel for a bit but levels off nicely.

I had to start mine in -30 C once without plugging it in. It didn't like it but it started anyways, I didn't let it warm up much and the transmission was acting funny like it was in 3rd gear to start but was fine after restarting. I usually don't plug it in unless it's gonna be colder than -15.
