The guy "Chuggernaut" is one of the top mods there, he wrote a very professional letter to them, and got a pretty decent response from them!
I personally think that the 4.5L could have been GM's savior. I personally know three different people who were holding out on buying new chevy trucks so they could buy a half ton diesel. And my dad's company was looking to buy two or three of them as well! Imagine GM actually beating everyone else to the market with something innovative for once, instead of being in the back of the pack, last to update and upgrade, last to follow a trend. The sales of the thing would have been outrageous!! The power and towing capabilities of a 3/4 ton, with the ride of a half ton, and the fuel efficiency of a compact pickup. Seems like win win win to me!! Unless the sticker was $50 large or something.
I play mr. gm because I work their. We where told by gm they have suspended ALL NEW models except the volt. for at least 2 years. Yes the camero, the truck. They also had a meeting with our dealership asking what we think we can do about selling more cars. We have been #1 in the state of washington for 8 months now on new car sales. We told them 60,000 new tahoes and suburbans arnt doing the trick. Their is NOTHING you can do. Its a great idea to hold off and figure out how not to loose 2 million dollars a day in operating costs.

I would love the see the 1/2 ton DMax come to fruition, however GM's operational cost structure issues run deeper than most people know. It goes well beyond cost of goods sold and payroll/contract issues.
My company sells high end (new and used) computer network devices to Fortune 1000 companies. Some time back one of our sales people was quoting GM some of their standard devices that they have in their Corp HQ as used because they were 15 year old technology long since discontinued by the manufacturer. We were quoting GM about $500 each for the used devices. (Keep in mind GM could have purchased new devices that were more up to current technological standards for the same $500 each and they would operate at 10 times faster speeds)....GM elected not to purchase new (current technology) devices, they also elected not to buy the older technology devices from us as used for $500 each. Instead they opted to go directly to the manufacturer who discontinued them and ask them to re-tool their plants to produce these 15 year old devices again. GM Paid this manufacturer gobs of money to cover the re-tooling costs then GM paid them $1,000 each to produce this 15 year old technology as brand new. All of this was done in massive quantities. This was crazy because GM could have upgraded their internal computer network to 10 times faster speeds for HALF the price of what they ended up spending.
That said, although I don't necessarily agree with all the gov't bailouts going on....I sure hope things work out!
Well GM has money because they're investing millions in Thailand to manufacture diesel engines & also pickup axles (AAM). I haven't heard of them putting this on the back burner either.
