Fire every person just above an actual line worker. Re-hire all the way up. Nobody in that company should be making more than 100k/year (not even CEOs) until GM is running smoothly on there OWN money. Someone needs to go in and clean it up, re position people, take some of the upper mangt. people and offer them a lower paying job or hit the road. Most of the issues are at the top anyway.
Maybe they could get some people to work in mangt. that actually know a thing about cars too. I'm pretty sure I could go throu a list of the cars that GM sale and number in order which will sell the most. Theres a few that need to be on hold, and a few that need to be on hold. I dont think focusing on green cars is the hot ticket, yes they need to produce them, but I dont see it being the main focus yet.
not to start an argument guys but honestly even though the high end guys do make too much money the union laborers are really what unfortunately made the biggest impact. a union auto work costs a company like gm over 70 dollars an hour when bennies and other variables are factored in. one of the main reasons all the foreign companies do so well is they aren't unionized. i knows its a touchy subject just thought ide throw that out there

I understand that, THere pay needs to be looked at and changed as well.
I live in oshawa ontario canada, a few weeks ago in may when they closed the truck plant alot of people no lost there jobs and the whole city just seemed down, there are alot of support businesses that had a to shut down or layoff there staff it was estimated that 5000 people lost work, the only light at the end of the tunnel i guess you could say is the camaro plant. there still running strong and offering overtime to get these cars built and out the door. my entire family has worked for Gm my dad did for 37 years and just retired this past february, everyones view on what should happen is different because it effects some more then others im glad they got money and secured pensions and such and i hope they make it because this city pretty much revolves around gm.
Just my .02

That is my point exactly. People can say what they want about the money that GM was loaned but if the goverment hadn't stepped in when they did and GM had collapsed during the height of the bank crisis and mortgage crisis, and while the Dow was in the 7,000s the "ripple" effect would have been exponentially larger.
I hope I don't see the day when diesel trucks and v-8's are no longer around, but i think it is coming fairly soon. maybe the US should realize the value of a diesel in a car or truck without charging an arm and a leg. and I wish the dang hippies and liberals would get off there kick that a diesel is so horrible for the environment. my coworkers dad worked in a mine and they were only allowed diesels in the mine so that people didn't croak because of the gasoline fumes

I was reading an article on the net the other day about a 3 cylinder diesel Mercedes crackerbox that got 125 mpg. If the Germans can do it, we should be able to do it!!

I will do everything in my power to not purchase a GM so long as this thing is in control of the entity called GM. As far as I am concerned this whole thing is illegal and does not represent capitalism nor the Republic of the United States of America.
Regardless, this is what is going to happen. The vehicles that anyone with common sense does not want to purchase will be made and will be forced on all of us to buy. This will happen in a few different ways: the economy will get so bad that the surrender of your current vehicle to a car crusher program will entice you to purchase the so called greenamiser coffin on wheels, gas prices will be raised beyond the $5 mark making $4/gallon price seem like a bargain, finally you will not be able to register a vehicle unless it is the one built and sold by the government.
There may be other ways to force you into these coffins on wheels but this is what is off the top of my head.
The people of this country clearly do not know what they are doing. They have their minds in all of the wrong places and this is why we are in the mess we are in now. You got what you deserve and you know who you are.
By the way, if you dont think fuel prices are not going up, remember this quote that was said to a group of Hollywood likes, "you have seen nothing yet". Guess who said that!
yea i really hope they make it too. if everyone lost their jobs at gm the ripple effect across the nation would be pretty huge
Kind of like the ripple effects you’re about to witness? The whole thing should have been left to collapse. As of pre Obama you could purchase and or build a brand new 1960's era Camaro and drive it with anything from a Gen1 small block to the latest technology engine available. Do you really think the entire GM group would have vanished if they were left to fail?
Now we will be eating a mighty fine CRAPP Sandwich and for a long time to come.
