Hey guys/gals
I'm new here (just posted in the introductions thread) and plan on sticking around to learn about diesels.
I need some professional advice on a purchase I am about to make this Tuesday. It's a high mileage truck so I just want some reassurance that I'm not buying something I shouldn't
I tend to haul 2+ race bikes long distances on the weekends & my old 4.8L Silverado just wasn't doing the trick.
The new (to me) truck is:
2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Long Bed.
It seems to have all the Bells and whistles.
I know the owner well and he's one of those guys who spares no expense on his toys. Everything is always meticulously maintained/serviced and the truck is in immaculate condition.
Here's what I know:
-Original Owner 160,000 miles
-Injectors first replaced back when they knew of the problems
-Injectors then replaced again recently "just because" (he is good friends with the local Chevy Svc Manager).
-Serviced regularly only by the dealer
-Banks Power pack System (includes exhaust, intake, waste gate, intercooler, ottomind tuner, tungsten II palm pilot) Banks Power | 01-04 Chevy/GMC - 6.6L Duramax LB7>>PowerPack® System
-Fabtech 6in. lift
-Fabtech traction bars
-Bilstein shocks
-Air Lift air bags for load leveling
-American Racing 17in. rims
-BFG all terrain tires
-Amp Research side steps (Automatic Dropping/Retracting)
-Dyn Audio front speaker/component system
-Focal rear speakers
-Diamond audio subs
-(2) Memphis amplifiers
-Audio Control LC6
-XM module (just need subscription
-25K fifth wheel hitch, trailer wiring both inside the bed and on the bumper
-Prodigy electric brake control
-New HD drilled and slotted brake disks with HD commercial type brake pads
-Mag Hytech rear diff cover
-Mag Hytech transmission pan (requires longer filter when serviced, has with 1 spare)
So that's the list of goodies the truck has.
Like I said, I'm a total noob in the world of Diesel but am quite mechanical.
He's not advertising it and picked up a Brand new replacement. He's giving it to me for about $7,500 below KBB.

The biggest thing I like to remember that its a buyers market. We, as buyers, usually have the upperhand when it comes to purchasing. But kbb has been pretty useless latley just due to how the economy has been, there have been trucks going for CHEAP, but you just have to look for the deals

I hear ya on that, I sold my 1500 for $4,500 below KBB
The owner isn't hurting for money. He said he was thinking about keeping it because it wont need smoged?
I have a lot to learn, didn't know they started smoging Diesels?

I would do it in a heartbeat. That is an awesome deal since you know it's been taken care of. Mines got 220,000 on it and it still runs great. If you take care of them right, They will last forever

Nice to know!
Yeah, he's that guy who replaces something that just needs repairing. Used the truck to haul his boat to/from the Rider etc.
But everything he has is top notch, I just wasn't sure about the mileage being that high.
Is there a major service that needs doing in the 200k range? Do turbos ever need rebuilding/refreshing?
TIA

I would say change your fluids front to back, coolant, front/rear diffs, power steering, brakes, trans, and transfer case.....I think that's all of them. Anyways, I just finished doing all of mine, and man, there was some dark crap that came out and I'm at 100,000 miles. I say go for it, that's a long list of goodies, even if you were paying KBB, it still wouldn't be a bad deal IMO. Just curious, what price did he give you?

160k miles isn't all that bad for a 2004. Thats 32k per year and if he takes care of it thats pretty good. Driving a vehicle all the time is better for it than sitting all the time or, especially in the diesel world, doing short trips to the market and back can be hard on a diesel. Depending on the price I would do it. I would also get the maint records from the guy and see what his records say for oil changes in the diffs & trans. Get the vin number and lets run a vin check on it and see what it shows.

Good idea! I'll get the service records.
Is it safe to post the VIN here? Or should I message someone privately?
If someone here can help decipher the VIN to find anything out, I would be mucho gracias

NM, found the VIN request sub-forum

Starting Jan 2010 it will need to be smogged and if it does not have all the original equipment on it you will have to put it back on to pass smog and that could add up to quite a bit so make sure you figure that in when deciding and maybe get the price down for that reason
