What exactly is the advantage of an Allison?

I am looking at a 2001 Duramax black with leather interior and its extremely nice and for only 13 grand but I want to know what exactly is so great about having an Allison tranny. What are they meant for?

For a diesel it is the single best automatic you could have. Alllison has deep roots in heavy duty transmission applications. Plus it was actually designed to work with the dmax.

The allison is the smartest transmission, it leans every time it shifts and like said above was built to interface with the d-max

What happens when it leans? I don't understand that. Smartest as in it shifts the best at the right moments like going uphill or downhill or racing and all that?

I meant learns, sorry. It monitors every shift, and alters the shift time to get closer to and ideal shift the next time it goes to that gear under similar load and throttle conditions.

Ok that makes sense. Thanks. I'm pretty sure what I wanna get now. LB7 Duramax with an Allison because from what I read on wookiepedia the second generation Duramax in 04 had overheating and head gasket problems. I want an older one cause I don't feel like buying a brand new one for 30 grand. And I heard the first gen have the most things you can do to modify them also.

The one thing to know about the LB7 first gen motors is the injectors go bad. Make sure you get a build sheet on it an find out if the injectors have been replaced.
