How do programmers REALLY work?

Hey eveeryone!!!!!

I have a question that I hope can be answered. I have read that the programmers increase the fuel output and change the timing. When I called Hypertec, they said to run my 01 in the second setting for the Hypertec III for economy which would change the timing in the first and second setting but not add fuel.

Other posts and articles say that the more fuel, less pedal so better economy, so run on the highest setting. That changes timing and adds fuel won't hurt the tranny.

So, what the story. Most of the time I want economy more than power. When I want more power for pulling a 12,000 pound fifth wheel, I am told to run on the tow/haul setting on programmer which I think is the second setting.

Is there any one that can explain this so that even I can understand it.

Also I was told that the Hypertec III and the Econo are about the same so run the III on setting 2 (economy).

Is this like a glass of water either half full or half empty, still same amount of water?

Thanks

well the higher the setting the better the fuel economy it makes the truck go down the road easier. When towing i would only run setting 1 or 2 to be safe on the trans. Timing being advanced is what helps mileage but the more power the better mileage as long as you have self control so dont push pedal to the floor.
