Cooling Fan

I Am Looking Into Removing The Clutch Fan And Installing An Electric Fan. Good Idea Vs. Bad Idea? I Think Good But The Question Is The Cfm I Have To Make Sure Im Going To Cool Enough Or Its Pointless. What Is The Cfm Requirements For The Lb7?

BAD IDEA!! Don't waste your money. It'll just drag down your electrical system. Which will put a load on your motor via the alternator instead of fan pulley. Plus it'll wear out your alternator faster too. Think of it this way... right now you've got a 300 HP motor turning your fan. Why downgrade to a 1/2 hp motor to try and do the same job? Dmax's have one of the best fan set ups of all the HD trucks.

Well I'd take a different route.. I'd try and make sure that your cooling system runs at maximum efficiency first. Maybe get it flushed, and put in some new/clean coolant. Also spray out your radiator to get all the nasty old bugs, and dirt and grime out.

Read these articles posted by Killerbee...

Performance, Intakes, Thermal Feedback, LLY Mouthpiece

They deal with the LLY motor, but it can be applied to all duramax's.
The most effictive way to actually help keep your engine cool would be to add an auxillary engine oil cooler. If you read those three articles posted by Killerbee you'll know more than some GM diesel techs do!!

Edit: The third article is titled "Thermal Feedback Loops" and is a link in Killerbee's signature.

Well my brother in law has the Flex-A-Lite fan it is has been working just fine. You can hear it a little bit inside the truck but it also has been getting around 22/23 mpg. And stock cfm is 2500. And this fan is putting out around 5000 cfm. So therefore more cooling power and it isn't gonna pull much off your alternator. Just go to there website and look at the amperages. I think it is a good idea. Of course he has other things done to his truck but either way. for the fan. When you turn the truck off the fan will still run for a min or two. And it sounds like your in a plain on the runway. But not as extreme.

I am working out the retrofit of an electroviscous fan clutch with smart circuitry. The best of all worlds. I would never install an electric...that would be a foolish loss of towing capacity from the cooling system.

I would never put a set of flex a lites on a working truck, I have a set on mine but its just a daily driver/playtoy. I got the fans new/used from a guy that i told not to buy them and his first trip towing 6k with them his truck would not stay cool so so now its back to stock fan! even on my truck, which never ran warm it now runs a bit warmer, and i dont have to deal with trans cooling!
