Oil Change Oddity

Hello all. I always have my mechanic do my oil changes & have with the last 3 duramax's I have had with no problems. This last weekend I got in a jam & had a lot of driving to do & was about 5% on the oil so I went to Valvoline & had them replace the oil this time.

My normal drill in the morning is to let the dog out, start the the truck, & let him do his thing & leave. About 4-5 minutes. Well since the oil change I notice a very slight & random knock. It's like a couple loose quarters in a dryer. The oil gauge stays at 160. Even if I rev it up a bit it doesn't register anything. I drive it for about a mile & it slowly goes up to about 185 & by the time I get to the freeway, about 2 1/2 miles, it is up to 210. It doesn't do that at all the rest of the day, just the last 3 mornings. I had my mechanic look at everything & he said it is full of oil & looks fine. Any clues?

If you can, fill out your signature. That way we know what model, year, etc... it might help us understand the problem better.

160, 185, 210? Aren't we talking about the coolant temp gauge here? The oil gauge goes from 0 to 60 to 120.

Totally disregard. Someone track me down & blow my head off. I'm clearly past the age of usefulness. I am looking at the temp gauge. What an idiot.

Thats to funny!

For the knocking. Do you do the oild changes by the DIC or mileage? If its by DIC most people say dont trucst it and I agree! I do mine every 5000 miles. I just did it and my DIC said 60%.. What a joke!

If you are getting a knocking you might want to add a oil additive that will thickin up the oil such as lucas. It makes the oil thicker so the pump will pump more oil. Especially at start ups in the morning.

Ever seen that commercial that says "Wish you were somewhere else?" That was me after I realized what I did. lol. Being that dumb is one thing but putting it out there for everyone to see is another. Oh well, it would be embarrassing if it didn't happen all the time. Anyway, as far as the little knock I honestly don't know if it did that all the time & is normal or if it just came to my attention. I have a 08 dually all stock. The way all this got started was after the oil change I drove about 400 miles & then parked in my driveway which is at a little angle back towards the street. Went out the next morning & saw a big oil spot underneath the truck. (Sunday) Freaked out thinking they did something wrong so I started watching the temp gauge to make sure my oil pressure was ok. Doh. That's when I started listening to the engine & noticed the little rattle. Probably was there all the time. The oil spot, as explained by my mechanic on Monday, was a failure by Valvoline to catch the oil before it dripped onto a pan underneath there but he told me to watch it ( not knowing at that time I can’t read gauges). Parking at an angle allowed it to spill off. I posted here & then on Tuesday morning, of course having the same oil pressure anomaly, my mechanic calmly pointed out the oil gauge to me. I then immediately went to the grocery store & bought 2 cartons of milk so I could get the large paper bag, threw away the milk & wore the paper bag over my head. As far as oil changes go I have always done it between 6-8k. That’s it. Gonna cut some eye holes in the paper bag now. Heard a lot of honking yesterday. Thanks guys.

If it makes you feel any better, my truck makes a constant noise. Sounds like a ticking or a piece of metal being tapped off another piece of metal. It's not real loud, and it's been there since day one. I just figure with an engine that big and powerful, you have to have some noises...

Bahahahahahaaaa

Ya Im sure its a "normal diesel" knock. Mine does it alot when start up first thing in the morning. Im with you thought I only honestly notice it when I think something is wrong and Im looking for it.

You might want to make your oil change intervals a little closer. Most people do them every 5-6,000 miles
