The limiting factor for maximum towing capacity on older trucks would it be their GVWR? GVWR for the truck and GVWR for the trailer can't be over right? If you're over GCWR are you illegal? So no matter what mods you do to your older truck, you still can't go over what's written in the door jamb sticker? So new trucks in the same configuration(4X4 Crew Cab) would have the advantage of having a higher GVWR and GCWR? I was just wondering the maximum towing capacity in case of an accident that you're held responsible in, I assume if you are over weight consequences are much worst then if you are legal weight wise.
Ok, i am asking for recreational purposes. So if gcwr is only a recommendation, how is the towing capacity determined? You can tow anything as long as the gvwr of the truck and the gvwr of the trailer is not exceeded? Or you got to follow maximum towing capacity of the manufacturer?
IDK how Manufacture determines capacity. IMO it's higher than it should be.
Recreational, you really shouldn't be bothered about weights, I could be wrong. Commercially you can pull as much weight as you registered the truck for, long as it covers GVWRs of truck and trailer, and it can legally be much greater than those ratings.
