Out of Gas Info.

Just in case this happens to any of you, I thought I would share my current experience. I was at the mall and started my truck, put it in reverse and Blah...it died. Tried cranking it over...nothing. Popped the hood, checked the fuel filter, primed it and gas started pouring out from the bottom of it. So I checked the WIF sensor, and it was unbelieveably loose. Tightened it up by hand and re-primed. Well after reading the instructions in my book, it says to crank it for 10-15 seconds and let off, repeat until it starts. Well no joke...it took me 35-40 minutes until that dang thing started again. That's a LONG time. So I changed all my filters and fluids today and am keeping an eye on it from now on. But just in case someone else here ever runs completely out of gas.....you're in for a looooooong time cranking until it starts again!

A lift pump would help with the priming. That's what I do when I change my Fuel filter.

It should not take that long to restart. Once the filter is full of fuel and you push the primer untill all the air is out and the primer gets hard to push it should only take about 10-15 seconds total to fire. I have drained my entire fuel system and it took about 30 seconds to get it to start.

Question too long

Are you sure there are no leaks elsewhere?30-45 minutes sounds like too long,as stated^^this is why the primer is there. The old 6.2 l engines had a self priming pump and assembly, and it rarely was SELF priming...POS!!

Let me ask this......when I popped the hood, I took the bleeder screw out and primed it about 7 times until diesel came out the top. Then I put the screw back in and cranked it for a loooong time. Should I have filled the filter, put the screw back in, then primed it some more? My uncle said that was normal because a lot of fuel sit somewhere in the engine and I ran it out.

I try never to go below a 1/4 tank...mainly cos it doesn't hurt the wallet as much when I fill up but also since I don't have lift pumps, I know the fuel pick up tube don't have to work as hard.

When I change my filter I prime it until fuel comes out, and tighten the screw .Then I pump it til it does not push down any more. it always fires right back up that way.

When I change my filter, I just pop the screw and pump till fluid comes out. But my truck actually ran the engine dry....even after I popped the screw and primed, it still took awhile to start. My uncle said that it would probably take about 15-20 minutes until all the air was out....and that's what it turned out to be. I'm just trying to figure out if I did it wrong, or if there is a faster way to get it started if it happens again.
