I have had a 1972 Chevelle for a couple years now. its a project car. mostly been saving the cash to try and get a lot done on it at once.
right now im looking into engine options. it has a '74 donor 350 ci engine that is only there to move it around. the previous owner had a blueprinted and balanced 350 racing block but over 15 years of storage let the antifreeze evaporate and the water cracked the block!!!!
the two options i have been looking into are a 383 ci twin turbo (or supercharged) Chevy gas V8, or a tuned Duramax. that banks sidewinder engine that redlines at like 6000rpm sounds like something i'd want to look further into. it runs about 550-600 hp and 800-900 lb/ft. they have shaved the weight on a ton of parts to allow it to spin faster and still be balanced which allows it to reach higher horsepower bands.
i just want something different for my car. a straight piped diesel makes my hair stand on end and i want my chevelle to do that.
im just looking for some input as the transmission and rear end pairing might be a little tricky as i am not towing obviously, and it doesnt weigh 7700 lbs.
which engine/year should i look at? an LB7, LLY, or LBZ? an LMM is going to be out of my price range i think.
is there much difference from block to block? or is it mostly just electronic and parts that change? which is better to work on?
i'm planning on a parallel twin turbo layout if that makes a difference.
