How To: Fuel Pressure Regulator install

hey just thought id post this for anybody looking to replace their FPRV just a few pick and tips. well first off its not all that bad just alot of disconnecting of sensors, the hardest part to me was trying to get the last bolt on the bottom of the FPR i had to rig a allen key because my torx socket was too big to fit in there but in the end it was worth it i have a extremely smooth idle, 1-2 mpg difference and the throttle is definitely more responsive. my fpr was bad from the day i bought my truck so this was like a night and day difference. here are some pics in progress.

Nice job. Mine was going bad as well as the pump so I put the LBZ pump and regulator in and it made a difference. Definitely a pain to change the whole pump though.

my truck is idleing rught and surges at stop lights to the point that i have to push the brake thru the floor. the dealer said that i need to replace; fuel pressure regulator, 4 glowplugs (right side), 4 injectors (right side), egr valve, egr sensor. when they did there tests they said that the flow rates checked good so the injectors arent under warranty, but i have high injector pressure. do you think that just the fuel pressure regulator will take care of most of the problem. no tuners yet just a 5" exhaust on it.

Well my guess is that you have high pressure because the regulator is letting too much fuel through, nothing to do with the injectors. I'd just change the regulator and go from there.

Try a different dealer.

Your FPR is most likely bad. So start by replacing that. Yes there is a lot of stuff in the way.

To get the bottom bolt out I use a Torx screwdriver and a pipe wrench. But make sure its a good screwdriver or you will shatter the handle. They arent torqued very tight.

The glowplugs if you really need them, are easy to replace. When you say right do you mean the actual right side of the motor (standing in front looking at it) or from sitting in the driver seat??

The Ones on the pass side are a piece of cake. The ones on the drivers side arent as easy as the steering shaft and firewall make things tight but you can still do it.

All you will need is to remove your wheel, remove your fender liner. Remove the nuts on top of the glowplugs with an 8mm, remove the glowplugs with a 13mm being careful not to snap one off in the head, then install the new ones and torque to 18lb-ft i IIRC. The nuts on top just get snug. The torque spec is very very very low.

Fpr?

i just added 16oz of 2 stroke oil to my tank when i fueled up this morning and now that ive ran it a little bit today i can feel theres a diffrence already. the surging can been decreased to a slight surge that dosent happen all the time. the enging still feels bad though it feels as though there is a miss, it has a lot of vibration, every once in a while the engine will smooth out and the exhaust will clear up but after 30sec it start smoking again and then gets rugh idle. this just kinda happens randomly. not too sure what my running temp is supposed to be either but when im driving and take it light on the throttle the temp sits at about 185 but as soon as i start to get heavy on the throttle the temp goes up to 210, it also reaches 210 after i let it idle for about 10min.

Just had my 05 GMC in the shop and found out I need to replace FPR. The shop wants $1700 buck to replace. After reading this thread I don't see any reason why I cant do that myself. Any suggestion on where to find a shop manual to help. Also the shop recommended that I put in a new pump as well the truck has about 140,000 miles any sugestion?
